How effective is Viagra?

Since its release, Viagra has proven effective for over 80% of men in improving their ability to achieve and maintain an erection. It has shown to be rapidly absorbed by the body, and in studies, men noted a significant positive physical response.

How does Viagra (Sildenafil) work?

Viagra contains sildenafil, a medicine that belongs to a group of treatments known as PDE5 inhibitors. It works by blocking the action of phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5), an enzyme that normally breaks down a substance called cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP).

When you are sexually aroused, your body releases cGMP, which relaxes the blood vessels in the penis and increases blood flow. By preventing cGMP from being broken down too quickly, Viagra helps improve blood flow to the penis, making it easier to achieve and maintain an erection.

Viagra only works when you are sexually stimulated and does not increase libido or cause spontaneous erections.

How long does it take Viagra to work?

Viagra (Sildenafil) quickly absorbs into the body. The effects are usually noticeable within 30 minutes and can last 4 to 5 hours. According to a study, 70% of the men achieved an erection in 30 minutes, and more than 80% achieved an erection in 45 minutes. So, it is better to take the medicine 1 hour before you want to have sex. Some factors may affect the length of time Viagra takes to work, including:

  • What food you have eaten
  • Amount of alcohol you have consumed
  • How aroused you are

What dose of Viagra should I choose?

Viagra comes in tablet form. The normal dose for Viagra is 50mg. Your GP may recommend a lower dose of 25mg if you are 65 years or older.

You should never take more than one tablet within 24 hours. Do not exceed the maximum dose of 100mg, as it will increase the risk of side effects. You can contact your doctor or our pharmacist for more information.

How should I take Viagra (Sildenafil)?

Always take Viagra exactly as prescribed by your doctor or as directed by the patient information leaflet.

  • Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.
  • Take it approximately 30 to 60 minutes before sexual activity.
  • Viagra can be taken with or without food.
  • Avoid large or high-fat meals before taking Viagra, as they may delay its effects.
  • Viagra only works when you are sexually stimulated.
  • Do not take more than one dose within a 24-hour period.

Side effects

Like all medicines, Viagra can cause side effects. However not everyone will experience these. Viagra side effects can include:

Common side effects:

  • Headaches
  • Muscle aches or pains
  • Flushing
  • Stomach upset
  • Dizziness
  • Hot flush
  • Indigestion
  • Feeling sick (Nausea)
  • Nasal congestion
  • Rash
  • Heartburn
  • Colour tinge to vision
  • Blurred vision
  • Visual disturbances

Severe side effects:

  • Priapism
  • Sudden decrease or loss of vision in one or both eyes
  • Serious skin reaction
  • Chest pains
  • Allergic reaction
  • Seizure or fits

In rare cases, Viagra can cause a potentially dangerous condition known as priapism, where an erection can last more than 4 hours and cause long-term damage if left untreated. This mostly occurs when you mix Viagra with certain medications or illegal drugs; if this happens, you must seek medical care immediately.

Though ED treatments are safe for the majority of men, patients suffering from cardiovascular disease should consult a physician before using them. You can learn more about possible side effects by speaking to your GP or contacting our pharmacist at Click Pharmacy.

For a complete list of side effects and safety information, please read the patient information leaflet provided with your medication.

Viagra warnings

Viagra may not be suitable for everyone. Before taking Viagra, inform your healthcare professional if you:

  • Take medicines containing nitrates for chest pain (angina).
  • Have been advised to avoid sexual activity due to a heart condition.
  • Have severe heart or liver problems.
  • Have recently had a heart attack or stroke.
  • Have low blood pressure.
  • Have a history of vision loss caused by non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION).
  • Have a condition that affects the shape of your penis or increases your risk of priapism (a prolonged erection).

Talk to your doctor if you experience chest pain, sudden loss of vision or hearing, or an erection lasting longer than four hours.

Can I get Viagra on the NHS?

You can get sildenafil on the NHS if you have erectile dysfunction. Branded versions of sildenafil, such as Viagra, are not typically available on the NHS.

Can I split Viagra tablets?

It is not recommended to split Viagra tablets. The tablets are designed to be taken whole for optimal effectiveness. If you think a lower dose might be more suitable, speak with your doctor.

What is the difference between Viagra and sildenafil?

The main difference between Viagra and sildenafil is that Viagra is the brand name for the medication, while sildenafil is the active ingredient in Viagra and is available as a generic. Both contain the same active ingredient and work in the same way to treat erectile dysfunction, but sildenafil is usually cheaper.

Do Viagra tablets become less effective over time?

Viagra tablets don’t lose their effectiveness over time. However, factors like the cause of your erectile dysfunction (ED), age, or other health conditions can affect how well it works.

Does Viagra go out of date?

Yes, Viagra does go out of date. The medication has a shelf life, typically 2 to 5 years from the date of manufacture. After this time, you should not take it. Always check the packaging for the exact expiration date before using it.

How to use Viagra for best results?

To get the best results from Viagra:

  • Take Viagra 30 to 60 minutes before sexual activity ( Viagra lasts for up to 4 hours).
  • Avoid heavy or fatty meals before taking it.
  • Engage in foreplay for better results.
  • Limit alcohol to avoid reducing effectiveness.
  • Take only the prescribed dose (no more than one tablet in 24 hours).

Can I drink alcohol while taking Viagra?

There is no direct chemical interaction between sildenafil and alcohol. However, drinking too much alcohol can reduce Viagra’s effectiveness and increase the risk of side effects, such as dizziness, headaches, and low blood pressure.

Can women take Viagra?

Viagra is not approved for use in women. It is specifically designed to treat erectile dysfunction in men.  If a woman is experiencing sexual dysfunction, it's best to consult a doctor for appropriate treatment options.
