What is BMI and why does It matter?

BMI, or Body Mass Index, is a simple way to check if your weight is in a healthy range for your height. It's often used as a starting point to understand if you may be underweight, overweight, or at a healthy weight.

How is BMI used?

BMI is a helpful starting point, but it doesn’t give the full picture of your health. It doesn’t take into account factors like muscle mass, fat distribution, age, sex, or body type. For example, someone who’s very muscular might have a high BMI even though they have low body fat. Older adults might have a normal BMI but still carry too much body fat due to muscle loss. Also, BMI may not reflect health risks equally across different ethnic groups.

That’s why BMI is often looked at alongside other health checks, like your waist measurement or waist-to-hip ratio. These can help identify extra fat around your middle — which is linked to a higher risk of heart disease, diabetes, and more.

What do the BMI numbers mean?

For most adults:

  • Below 18.5 – Underweight
  • 18.5 to 24.9 – Healthy weight
  • 25 to 29.9 – Overweight
  • 30 to 39.9 – Obese
  • 40 and above – Severely obese

Should I be concerned about a high BMI?

A BMI over 25 can increase your risk of conditions like high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers. If your BMI is over 25, you should seriously consider weight loss and improve your overall health to lower the risk of obesity-related.

What should I do next?

If your BMI is over 27 and you have weight-related health issues, you may qualify for prescription weight loss treatments that can help you lose significantly more weight than with diet and exercise alone. Visit our weight loss page for more information.
