What is Imigran Nasal Spray

Containing the active ingredient sumatriptan, Imigran nasal spray is used as an effective treatment for relieving the symptoms of a migraine. Migraines are a common health condition, affecting approximately one in every five women and one in every 15 men, but they can be severely debilitating.

Further information on migraines and Imigran Nasal Spray can be found at NHS migraine.

Why choose Imigran Nasal Spray?

Imigran nasal spray can be used to relieve the symptoms of migraines. In trials, patients agreed that the nasal spray got to work on addressing and stopping the migraine symptoms faster than the tablet form and though for some users, it was less effective in dealing with severe symptoms, there were fewer side effects from the nasal spray over the tablets.

As with any medication, it is important to find what works best for you, but the nasal spray is a safe and easy way to help end the effects of your migraines which can include a severe headache, pain in the side or front of the head, nausea and sensitivity to sound and light.

Can I buy Imigran Nasal Spray online?

Ordering Imigran nasal spray online is a quick, easy and confidential process and simply involves you filling out a brief assessment form. To ensure you feel secure in your purchase, your answers will be checked by one of our doctors, Jana Abelovska and Leonard Jones, to ensure that this is the best option to help with your migraines.

How effective Is Imigran Nasal Spray?

Imigran is an effective choice for migraine sufferers as it can be given at any point after the onset of a migraine and be equally as beneficial, whereas other options need to be taken as early as possible after a migraine has begun to be fully effective.

It is a fast acting pain relief option which can get directly to the root cause of the migraine, the widening blood vessels in the brain, and assist by contracting them to ease the pain and other symptoms.

How does Imigran Nasal Spray work?

Migraines are caused by the temporary widening of blood vessels in the head. Imigran nasal spray works to reduce the size of the enlarged vessels, which in turn stops the pain signals being sent to the brain. It does this by blocking certain natural substances which are released, which cause the symptoms of a migraine, such as pain and nausea.

What dose should I choose?

Imigran nasal spray is available in 10mg and 20mg strengths, with each spray of the product containing one single dose of the active ingredient sumatriptan. For adults aged between 18 and 65, the recommended dosage is one 20mg spray, whereas, for children aged between 12 and 17, the recommended dosage is one 10mg spray. Do not use more than two sprays of either dose relevant to you in a 24-hour period, and it is important to note that Imigran nasal spray is not suitable for children under the age of 12.

How should I take Imigran Nasal Spray?

It is best to use this product as soon as you feel a migraine starting, however, it can be used at any time during the attack with equal effect. Imigran nasal spray features three parts: a nozzle, a finger grip and a blue plunger. To use the spray, the nozzle should be inserted into your nostril, with one finger pressed down on your other nostril. Once the nozzle is in place, the blue plunger can be pressed. This will release a full, single dose of the medicine into your nose. More information on how to take this medicine can be found in the patient information leaflet provided with a step-by-step breakdown, or you can contact our specialists at Click Pharmacy.

Is it safe to use Imigran Nasal Spray whilst pregnant or breastfeeding?

There has been very little testing done on the safety of sumatriptan on pregnant women, their foetus or on a breastfeeding mother and baby. As such, the advice is to start by speaking to your GP or online with one of the doctors at Click Pharmacy, which may be easier if you are at home with a newborn and/or breastfeeding.

It is important to note that there are no found risks yet of birth defects in women who use sumatriptan during pregnancy, though a discussion with a medical expert should put your mind at rest either way.

With regard to breastfeeding, the advice is to avoid breastfeeding for 12 hours after using a sumatriptan product and to discard milk pumped during this time.

Is it safe to use Imigran Nasal Spray with whilst taking other medication

Sumatriptan should not be used with certain medications and supplements, including herbal supplements. Mixing Imigran with these medications can stop its effectiveness or even cause adverse effects. You should tell your doctor all other medications and supplements you are currently taking prior to purchasing Imigran nasal spray, the most important of which being:

  • St John’s Wort: can make side effects more likely
  • MAOIs or monoamine oxidase inhibitors: do not sumatriptan if you have taken these in the last two weeks
  • other triptans and 5-HT1 receptor agonists: must have stopped taking these at least 24 hours before using Imigran
  • SSRIs or Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors or SNRIs Serotonin Noradrenaline
  • Reuptake Inhibitors: a mixture of these and sumatriptan can cause serotonin syndrome, which includes restlessness, sweating and increased heart rate.
  • ergotamine (used to treat migraine): do not use for 6+ hours after using Imigran

Choosing between generic vs branded Imigran Nasal Spray

A generic sumatriptan nasal spray is a spray that is a replica of medication that is found in the market in the form of a brand-name nasal spray. In this case, Imigran is the brand-name nasal spray. Therefore, the general sumatriptan nasal spray will have the same dosage form, safety, strength, route of administration, quality, performance characteristics, and intended use as the branded Imigran one.

However, it is essential to note that sumatriptan nasal spray is in both generic and brand medication forms. There is not much difference between the two. A generic sumatriptan nasal spray is available for 5 mg and 20 mg. Similarly, the brand-name Imigran nasal spray is available as a 5 mg and 20 mg nasal spray, as well. It is best to consult your provider regarding the exact nasal spray you are supposed to use. Sumatriptan nasal spray treatments usually differ depending on the individual.
