What is Elocon Scalp Lotion
Elocon Scalp Lotion contains 0.1% w/w mometasone furoate in a topical formulation designed to be used on the scalp. It is classified as a potent steroid and is used on the surface of the skin to calm redness and reduce the itchiness in conditions such as psoriasis or dermatitis. Psoriasis is a skin condition in which scaly, flaky, pink, itchy patches develop on the elbows, knees, and scalp, as well as other parts of the body. Dermatitis or contact dermatitis is a type of eczema triggered by contact with a particular substance. It causes the skin to be dry and irritated; there may be swelling and redness.
How effective Is Elocon Scalp Lotion?
The active ingredient in Elocon Scalp Lotion is 0.1% w/w mometasone furoate, which is a potent steroid that acts as an anti-inflammatory with anti-psoriatic activity. The absorption into the body is minimal, and the majority of this is excreted within 72 hours of application.
It is used on the scalp in adults and children over two years of age in cases of psoriasis and dermatitis.
Dermatitis may also be atopic; this type of eczema usually begins during infancy with an itchy rash that occurs where the skin flexes, e.g. in the front of the neck, the inside of the elbows, or behind the knees.
Elocon Scalp Lotion reduces the redness, inflammation, and itchiness caused by these conditions.
Triggers may vary from person to person but can include soaps, detergents, and perfumes. Since there is no known cure for these skin conditions, it is essential to adopt certain lifestyle habits to prevent flare-ups as much as possible. In most people, this may mean using a body wash without perfumes and soap. Using washing products made purposely for hypersensitive and dry atopic skin will prevent further irritation and drying of the top layers of the skin.
Can I buy Elocon Scalp Lotion online?
Elocon Scalp Lotion is a prescription-only medicine. It is available for online purchase. You are welcome to book an appointment with a health expert at Click Pharmacy to discuss how best to use this product. It can be purchased online in 30ml bottles and will be sent directly to you by Next Day Delivery.
What dose should I choose?
Elocon Scalp Lotion is only available in one dose. The product contains 1mg of mometasone furoates in every gram of lotion. The lotion is available in 30ml bottles.
How should I use Elocon Scalp Lotion?
The treated area should not be covered by bandages or plasters unless specifically instructed to do so by the doctor or skin specialist. Due to its steroid nature, the product should not be used in large quantities and over a long period of time.
Adults and children over two years of age should apply a few drops of Elocon Scalp Lotion onto the affected area of the scalp once a day. This lotion should be gently massaged into the scalp until it is completely absorbed. It does not matter whether the hair is wet or dry when the cream is applied to the scalp.
If a dose is omitted in error, the treatment should be applied as soon as the patient remembers. A double dose should not be used when this happens, but the dosage should be carried on as before.
When using Elocon Scalp Lotion for an extended period (e.g. several weeks or months), the product should not be stopped abruptly. A doctor should be consulted to taper the use of the lotion gradually before stopping altogether. Abrupt cessation of use after long-term use can cause flare-ups with stinging and burning of the scalp.
How long do I use Elocon Scalp Lotion for before I notice a difference?
Since Elocon Scalp Lotion contains a potent steroid component, the difference should be noticed from the very first use. The doctor should be consulted on the length of use.
When using Elocon Scalp Lotion for an extended period of time (e.g. several weeks or months), the product should not be stopped abruptly once the scalp problem is better. A doctor should be consulted to taper the use of the lotion gradually before stopping altogether. Abrupt cessation of use after long-term use can cause flare-ups with stinging and burning of the scalp.
How does Elocon Scalp Lotion work?
The active ingredient in Elocon Scalp Lotion is 0.1% w/w mometasone furoate, which is a potent steroid that acts as an anti-inflammatory with anti-psoriatic activity. The absorption into the body is minimal, and the majority of this is excreted within 72 hours of application.

In order to alleviate the condition and avoid flare-ups, it is essential to avoid triggers, which vary from person to person. These can include soaps, detergents, and perfumes. Since there is no known cure for these skin conditions, it is important to adopt certain lifestyle habits to prevent flare-ups as much as possible. In most people, this may mean using a body wash without perfumes and soap. Using washing products made purposely for hypersensitive and dry atopic skin will prevent further irritation and drying of the top layers of the skin.
What are the side effects of Elocon Scalp Lotion?
Like all medicines, Elocon Scalp Lotion may have side effects, but not everybody gets them. The ingredient in Elocon Scalp Lotion is 0.1% w/w mometasone furoate, which acts as an anti-inflammatory with anti-psoriatic activity. The absorption into the body is minimal, and the majority of this is excreted within 72 hours of application.
Side effects may include allergic skin reactions, thinning of the skin, bacterial or secondary skin infections, acne, inflammation and infection of the hair follicles, discolouration of the skin, red marks, stinging, burning, itching, excessive hair growth, and blurred vision.
If a large amount of lotion is used or the product applied over a long period of time, this may affect a child's hormones which may lead to rounding of the face and delayed growth and development. This side effect rarely happens in adults, but changes in hormone levels may lead to tiredness, weakness, and dizziness when standing or sitting down.
Please speak to your doctor or consult our specialists at Click Pharmacy should you require any further advice.
When shouldn’t I use Elocon Scalp Lotion?
Elocon Scalp Lotion is not recommended for children younger than 2 years. If a large amount of lotion is used or the product applied over a long period of time, this may affect a child's hormones which may lead to rounding of the face and delayed growth and development.
Women who are pregnant, planning to get pregnant or breastfeeding should consult their doctor before using the product.
The product should not be used near naked flames or while smoking. Fabrics that come into contact with the lotion burn more easily even after being washed, as there may be product build-up.
When Elocon is the right choice for Scalp Psoriasis
Patients rated Elocon highly; however, since it is a potent treatment option, you can not purchase it without a valid prescription. If you do not have a verified prescription, you can simply complete a free online survey, which is available on our website. Our team of doctors and pharmacists will assess the completed survey, ensuring that the treatment is right for you – particularly if the skin on your scalp is very itchy and cracks consistently.
Elocon lotion is considered safe for most scalp lesions. However, scalps with scaling and fissured lesions should be treated with Elocon ointment. Similarly, particularly sensitive skin should be treated with Elocon cream. It would be best not to use Elocon lotion for open sores.
Elocon Scalp Lotion vs Betnovate & Betacap
Elocon Scalp Lotion is prescribed for conditions such as eczema, dermatitis, and scalp psoriasis. Similarly, Betnovate Scalp and Betcap solutions are used for the same purpose. However, while Elocon scalp lotion contains the steroid mometasone, Betnovate and Betacap contain betamethasone. This is the key difference between them. Although betamethasone and mometasone are categorised as potent steroids, the strengths show a slight difference. Therefore, the choice between the three often depends on personal preference and individual response.
How should Elocon Scalp Lotion be applied?
Go over the instructions provided in the Patient Information Leaflet that come with the lotion. In addition to this, note down instructions given by your GP.
You should apply Elocon Scalp Lotion in the form of a few drops to the affected areas of the scalp once every day. First, apply to cover the affected areas, and use your hands to gently massage the lotion into the treated area until it dissolves into the scalp. As your condition continues to improve, use the lotion less and less unless advised otherwise by your GP.
Additionally, avoid getting Elocon Lotion in your eyes, nose, or mouth. If it accidentally goes into these areas, immediately wash them with cold water.
Moreover, thoroughly wash your hands before you apply the medication. Similarly, wash your hands generously once you are done massaging the scalp.
For severe conditions, airtight dressings for the affected areas are recommended. However, do that unless your primary healthcare provider advises you. Airtight dressings or bandages are used to help the body's absorption of the medicine, which can significantly increase the possibility of side effects. Nonetheless, if you are going to use Elocon Scalp Lotion under dressings, make sure to cleanse the skin before you apply the lotion.
Note that Elocon lotion is flammable. Therefore, do not place the treatment near open flames, and avoid application near naked flames or lit objects. Also, do not smoke while applying the lotion.
You should immediately discontinue the medicine if your skin condition does not improve within two weeks of treatment. Inform your GP right away. Likewise, use the Elocon Scalp Lotion only briefly, as you have been prescribed the treatment.
If an infection appears in the area of the skin being treated with Elocon Scalp Lotion, discontinue the treatment and inform your GP. Lastly, do not use Elocon lotion as a moisturiser on your body or face.
Can Elocon lotion be used on the face?
No. You should never use Elocon lotion on the face, as it is intended for the scalp. The corticosteroids present in the lotion are too potent for the face and may cause severe side effects.
Can Elocon Scalp Lotion be bought over the counter?
No. Elocon scalp lotion is a prescription-only product. However, you will need a prescription for Elocon scalp lotion since it is a corticosteroid treatment.
Does Elocon Lotion lighten skin?
Yes, Elocon lotion tends to lighten the skin. Unfortunately, it is one of the prevalent side effects. Although loss of colour is quite common with Elocon lotion, it does not mean you should use it for this purpose.
Alternative Treatments
Suppose Elocon lotion is not suitable for you for some reason. In that case, you can use other prescription-only corticosteroid treatments that are commonly used for scalp problems, such as Betnovate Scalp Application and Betacap Scalp Application. These work similarly to Elocon but contain a slightly different steroid ingredient: betamethasone valerate.
Other over-the-counter treatments include Capasal shampoo, Alphosyl, and Nizoral. You can use these in cases of scalp conditions like dermatitis and severe dandruff.
What is the active ingredient in Elocon Scalp Lotion?
The active ingredient in Elocon Scalp Lotion is mometasone furoate.
Can I use Elocon Scalp Lotion on other areas of my body?
Elocon Scalp Lotion can only be used on the scalp. It should not be used on any other part of the body.
How long does it take to notice an improvement in my scalps condition?
Although the majority of patients notice an improvement in their scalp after the first use, this may vary depending on the severity of your case.
Is Elocon Scalp Lotion flammable?
Elocon Scalp Lotion is highly flammable. To prevent it from catching fire it should not be exposed to naked flames, burns or other fabrics. When washing a fabric that has come into contact with Elocon Scalp Lotion, there is a chance that it may catch fire.
What if I forget to use Elocon Scalp Lotion?
If you forget to use Elocon Scalp Lotion, you should use it as soon as you remember. Unless it is almost time for your next dose, in that case you should skip the previous dose. You should never take two doses at once, even if you are making up for a missed dose.
Does using Elocon Scalp Lotion cause hair loss?
No, using Elocon Scalp Lotion does not cause hair loss.
