What is Balneum Cream

Balneum Cream works by replacing the oils that have been lost in dry skin, with a soothing and softening effect. This also helps prevent further loss of skin moisture. Balneum Cream contains urea in an easily absorbed smooth white cream to relieve itching. Urea is a substance found naturally in the skin that helps the skin retain water. Balneum Cream is used in people with dry skin conditions such as those with eczema and psoriasis whose skin has reduced amounts of urea. Another active ingredient, Ceramide 3, helps to restore the barrier function of the skin.

When shouldn’t I use Balneum Cream?

It is important not to use Balneum Cream if there is an allergy or sensitivity to any of its ingredients, as this will aggravate the skin condition. It is not indicated and should not be used in the treatment of acute erythroderma and acute inflammatory, oozing or infected skin lesions.

It should not be used on bleeding, broken, or inflamed skin in any condition.

No clinical data on Balneum Cream used in pregnancy or during lactation is available. However, there are no specific restrictions concerning its use during pregnancy. It should not be used on breasts immediately before lactation takes place.

Balneum Cream is for external use only. Mucous membranes and eyes should be avoided.

This product should not be used next to naked flames or when smoking as it poses a risk of severe burns. Clothing that has been in contact with the cream will burn more easily and is a serious fire hazard. The washing of such clothing will not remove it from the fabric.

How effective is Balneum Cream?

Balneum Cream is active in keeping the skin moisturised for 24 hours. It is used for the treatment of itching and lack of hydration caused by dry skin, often in those suffering from eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, and other skin scaling conditions, which worsen when the skin is allowed to become dehydrated.

The ingredient Ceramide 3 helps to restore the barrier function of the skin and helps to prevent further drying and irritation of the upper layers of the skin. Ceramides are found naturally in the skin; their function is to draw water up to the outer skin layers. In certain skin conditions, the skin is not producing sufficient ceramides, and this compromises the structure of the skin.

How should I use Balneum Cream?

Balneum Cream can be used by children, adults, and the elderly. It should be applied to the affected area/s twice a day.

Since there is no known cure for some of these skin conditions, it is important to adopt certain lifestyle habits in order to prevent flare-ups as much as possible. In most people, this may mean using a body wash without perfumes and soap. Using washing products made purposely for hypersensitive and dry atopic skin will prevent further irritation and drying of the top layers of the skin. It is also important to avoid very hot water and to stay too close to heaters for the same reason.

The patient is also encouraged to avoid scratching the itchy skin as this may continue to damage the skin, cause breakages and spread the flare-up. Chronic scratching may cause the skin to thicken to a leathery texture. Instead of scratching, the areas can be gently rubbed with the surface of the fingers instead.

In babies with atopic eczema, anti-scratch mittens may be used to stop them from scratching and damaging the skin.
