How effective is Wegovy?

Wegovy is a very effective weight loss treatment option. Clinical trials have shown that adults with obesity who took Wegovy to lose weight experienced a weight loss of 15% of their body weight in a 68-week weight loss journey. People using Wegovy with lifestyle changes lost around 33 pounds (15 kilograms) versus 5 pounds (2 kilograms) who didn't use the drug. It stands out from other weight loss medications due to its ability to reduce significant weight compared to other medicines.

How does Wegovy work?

Wegovy contains the active ingredient semaglutide, classified as a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. It works by reducing the appetite, leading the individual to eat less and resulting in weight loss.

Semaglutide is an artificial version of the hormone glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). Our bodies release this hormone after eating to regulate blood sugar levels. This makes us full and satisfied. By mimicking this hormone, Wegovy gives you the same feeling when eating less food.

Wegovy controls your hunger level and appetite, making you eat less and feel fuller for longer periods. It is vital that you should follow a healthier diet and increased physical plan to lose weight. Eating fatty food or sugary drinks may reduce the effectiveness of the drug.

What dose of Wegovy should I take?

Wegovy is available in 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg, 1.7 mg, and 2.4 mg of semaglutide pre-filled injections.

The starting dose is 0.25 mg once weekly and increases to 2.4 mg once weekly, across a 16 week period.

Wegovy should be injected once a week on the same day each week.

How should I take Wegovy?

Wegovy is injected under the skin of the upper arms, stomach (two inches away from the belly button) or thigh. Do not inject in the same site for the next injection, and keep on rotating the site.

Wegovy pack comes with 4 single dose prefilled pens or a single pen with prefilled solution. The procedure for administering them is different.

Single-dose prefilled pen

Remove the cap, check the clear and colourless liquid, and inject it straight into the skin. Once you hear the first click, it means the injection has started. Keep holding the injection until the yellow indicator is still moving and you hear the second click. It indicates that the dose has been injected, and now you can discard the pen.

Single pen with prefilled solution

It is a dial-a-dose pen that contains 4 doses of the drug. It comes with 4 needles and use a new needle for every dose. Remove the cap and perform a flow check of the pen after ensuring the liquid is clear and colourless. Using the dose selector, set the dose until the correct dose is showing. Inject the needle into the skin, hold the dose button, and slowly count to 6 until the dose counter resets to "0". Remove the needle and discard it. Place the cap back on the pen, and safely store it for future use if there are still doses left.

The recommended course for weight loss is to increase your dose to the next level every 4 weeks. But you may have to stay on the same dose if you are experiencing side effects, or you feel you may still have to remain on the same dose and not ready to go up. Consult your doctor for any concerns you may have.

Wegovy vs Saxenda

Wegovy and Saxenda are both injectable weight loss treatments. The active ingredient in Wegovy is semaglutide and Saxenda’s active ingredient is liraglutide. Though the active ingredients are different, both are GLP-1 agonists and work similarly by regulating blood sugar levels and reducing appetite.

The dosage for weight loss treatments of both medicines is different. Wegovy is a once-weekly injection, with the dosage increasing every month. Saxenda weight loss medication is used daily, with the dosage increasing every week.

Some clinical trials have shown that the Wegovy pen is more effective in showing significant weight loss than Saxenda. However, it is essential to note that results for weight loss can vary from person to person depending on the medical history and current health condition. For some individuals, Wegovy may work better, and for others, Saxenda may be a better choice.

Wegovy vs Ozempic

Wegovy and Ozempic are two different brand names which use the same active ingredient, semaglutide. Though the active ingredient is the same, the purpose is different. Wegovy weight loss injection is used for weight management and aids weight loss in combination with a healthy diet and exercise. Ozempic treats type 2 diabetes and lowers the risk of heart attacks and strokes in adult diabetic patients over 18 years old.

Both medicines contain different amounts of the active ingredient and are not interchangeable. You cannot use both medicines together.
