What is Duofilm

Duofilm is a medication in the form of a liquid which is used on the skin to treat common skin and foot warts. It is also used to help gradually remove corns and calluses. The active ingredients in Duofilm are Lactic acid and Salicylic acid. These are classified as keratolytic, and they work by drawing moisture into the skin and thus dissolving the substance that causes skin cells to clump together in the formation of warts, corns, and calluses.

What are the side effects of Duofilm?

Many medications can cause side effects, but this does not mean that you will have any. If, at any point, you feel that there is an unusual response to the medication, speak to your doctor or pharmacist about it.

Duofilm may cause allergic skin reactions, also referred to as dermatitis. These are effects such as scaling, dryness, rash, swelling, irritation, itching, burning sensation, redness, blistering, pain, and hypersensitivity at the site of application. It can also cause skin discolouration and excessive skin growth.

If Duofilm is accidentally applied to normal, healthy skin, then there may be blistering and skin exfoliation in these areas.

How long do I use Duofilm for before I notice a difference?

The length of your treatment will depend on the case. Most warts will show improvement within 1-2 weeks of treatment. More persistent warts may need 4-8 weeks of treatment. If the wart persists for more than 12 weeks, then you should consult your doctor for advice.

To avoid spreading the warts to others, it is essential to note that they are contagious by contact. Thus, you need to use your own towels, and if the wart is at the bottom of your feet, you should avoid walking barefoot. Warts thrive in moist, warm environments and so it is easy to get a wart in a shared space, such as communal showers in the gym or next to a pool.

How does Duofilm work?

The active ingredients in Duofilm are Lactic acid and Salicylic acid. These are classified as keratolytics. They work by drawing moisture into the skin and thus dissolving the substance that causes skin cells to clump together in the formation of warts, corns, and calluses. Gradually these cells are sloughed off by Duofilm, and the normal skin ridgelines are repaired, thus returning the skin to a normal healthy state.

How Effective Is Duofilm?

The active ingredients in Duofilm are Salicylic acid and Lactic acid. These act by causing a keratolytic effect on the skin and causing the skin to shed cells. They do this by drawing moisture into the skin, and this slowly dissolves the substance that causes the skin cells to adhere together. Duofilm works on warts, corns, and calluses in the same way, and thus, they will slowly peel off until they are entirely removed.

Warts are caused by viruses, and these are contagious. Salicylic acid / Lactic acid does not affect the virus, but it still removes common skin and plantar (foot) warts with the same keratolytic effect. The affected area will slowly start to get sloughed off until it is completely removed.

The length of treatment will depend on the case, as well as the size of the wart, corn, or callus. It is essential not to use Duofilm more often than recommended by your doctor or pharmacist.

What dose should I choose?

Duofilm wart remover is only available in one dose containing Salicylic acid 16.7% w/w and Lactic acid 15% w/w. Use it as instructed by the doctor. Do not exceed the usage mentioned on the label unless directed by the doctor. Duofilm is for use on the skin only.

How should I use Duofilm?

Duofilm should be applied once daily and only to the affected areas.

It should not be used on infants under 2 years of age.

For the best results, the procedure for applying Duofilm is as follows:

  1. Soak the wart/corn/callus in warm water for 5 minutes and then dry the area thoroughly.
  2. Rub the surface of the wart/corn/callus with a nail file, pumice stone, or coarse washcloth. Be careful not to cause any breaking in the skin or bleeding.
  3. Apply a thin layer of Duofilm with the applicator brush directly to the wart / corn / callus, being careful to avoid the healthy surrounding skin. You may apply some petroleum jelly around the affected area to avoid getting the medicine on it.
  4. Allow the solution to dry thoroughly. If the wart is large or on the foot, this can be covered with a plaster or dressing to help with the penetration of ingredients.
  5. The treatment should be continued for 12 weeks or until the wart / corn / callus is completely cleared from the skin and the normal ridgelines of the skin have been repaired.

If warts do not clear within 12 weeks, you should consult your doctor.

When shouldn’t I use Duofilm?

You should not use this product if you have ever had a bad reaction to any of its ingredients in the past.

Duofilm is not recommended for use in infants under the age of 2. Children under 12 years of age should only use the medication under the supervision of an adult.

Duofilm is not recommended for patients suffering from diabetes, nerve damage to the hands and feet, or poor blood circulation.

It should not be used on the face and other sensitive areas. Healthy skin should not be treated with Duofilm. Do not use it in the same area with other medicines. Do not inhale the vapours, and do not smoke while applying Duofilm, as it is a flammable product.

Using Duofilm during or immediately after viral disease is not recommended, for example, during influenza, chickenpox, or other viral infections.

You should not use Duofilm if you are pregnant or breastfeeding unless this has been recommended by your doctor.

What is the difference between Duofilm and Scholl Seal & Heal Verruca Removal Gel?

When compared to Scholl Seal & Heal Verruca Removal Gel, Duofilm has a higher percentage of Salicylic acid, and in addition, it also contains Lactic acid. These both help in having a faster action in the removal of warts, corns, and calluses. Thanks to its viscosity, Duofilm sticks to the affected area and does not leak onto healthy skin. This adherence also ensures that the medicine can penetrate the affected area better to remove warts, corns, and calluses in a safe and effective way.
