What is MolluDab

MolluDab Solution is a treatment for molluscum contagiosum (MC) which when applied to the affected areas of skin, works to break down the cells which have been attacked by the virus, build a defence against it and reduce the appearance of the spots overall.

The skin is our largest organ and is exposed to more than anything else to the environment, pollutants, bacteria, viruses and all other external elements. As such, it becomes incredibly easy to contract skin conditions that require medical intervention in order to treat them.

One such condition is molluscum contagiosum (MC). This is a viral infection that affects the skin and can occur at any age, although 9 out of 10 cases happen in children. It is generally harmless, if a little unsightly, that should clear within a few months. However, it can also spread to other areas of the body, meaning it can take up to 18 months for the condition to disappear completely.

Symptoms are mild and are usually limited to firm, small, raised spots measuring 2 to 5mm in size on the skin that have a dimple in the middle which can alert you to the fact that the condition is MC. They are not usually painful but can be itchy. They might develop in small clusters in different parts of the body but are most commonly found behind the knees, on the groin or in the armpit. It can recur in sufferers but is unlikely.

The MC virus can be spread through:

  • Close and direct contact with an infected person (e.g. touching their skin)
  • Touching objects which have been contaminated with the virus (e.g. towels, toys and clothes)
  • Sexual contact (all types of intimate touching as well as sexual intercourse)

The duration of the infectious period for MC is not known, but it is believed that it could last until the very last spot has disappeared.

It will also work to improve the appearance of the unsightly spots, which can cause embarrassment in some sufferers, preventing them from doing activities they would have otherwise done.

A small amount of the product should be applied to the spots on the affected area (once the diagnosis is confirmed), and this should help to clear the skin of the virus in 2 to 4 weeks. Untreated, this virus can spread to other parts of the body and last up to 18 months.

How does MolluDab Solution (5% Potassium Hydroxide) work?

MolluDab Solution contains the active ingredient potassium hydroxide (5%), which is responsible for the improvement in the symptoms of the molluscum contagiosum virus. When it is applied to the spots twice daily as directed, it will break down the skin cells which contain the virus. In doing so, it will alert the immune system to the virus’s presence, allowing it to respond to it by mounting an inflammatory reaction. This inflammatory reaction will kill the virus, clearing it from the skin and allowing it to heal.

For how long do I use MolluDab Solution (5% Potassium Hydroxide) before I notice a difference?

Some patients will find that they respond particularly quickly to the treatment provided by MolluDab Solution and will see results in as little as 1 week.

Generally speaking, the immune system will take 4-6 days to mount its inflammatory reaction, which is responsible for killing the virus and allowing the skin to heal. Once this response has cleared the virus, the spots should all disappear within 1 to 5 weeks with use as directed (to a maximum of 4 weeks).

What are the side effects of MolluDab Solution (5% Potassium Hydroxide)?

As with any treatment for the skin, there can be rare cases of side effects being experienced, although these are most likely as a result of an allergic reaction to one of the ingredients found within the product. If a reaction does occur, discontinue use immediately. If symptoms persist or get worse, speak to your doctor or one of the professionals at Click Pharmacy.

Side effects can also happen if the product is misused if it gets into the eyes or is ingested, so always use as directed.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, speak to your doctor before use.
