What is Senokot

Senokot Syrup uses natural extracts to provide gentle but effective relief from the symptoms of constipation. It is a mild formula that can be used on children as young as 2 to gently stimulate the bowel to alleviate the build-up, which can cause discomfort. It works in 8 to 12 hours to restore the natural rhythm of the body to help you feel bright and fresh once more.

The syrup mixture means it is easy for all to take and the natural remedies found in it work in the same way as fruits such as prunes and figs cause a reaction in the muscles needed. Constipation can be caused by a list of issues and can cause mild discomfort in the sufferer. Senokot Syrup will help to remove the problem and is gentle enough to be taken regularly if it is an issue you suffer from repeatedly.

How effective is Senokot Syrup?

Senokot Syrup has been proven to gently and effectively relieve constipation from the first usage. Its active ingredient is senna fruit which stimulates the muscles in the bowel into a movement which will assist to restore the body to its natural function. Just two spoonfuls of the syrup taken in the evening before bedtime can encourage the movement needed the next day, usually working within 8 to 12 hours.

Two spoons of the syrup should be enough for adults and children over 12 years of age, but if the problem persists, it is gentle enough to take for several days until the body’s natural rhythm is restored. Consult your doctor if the issue continues for 5 days or more.

Can I buy Senokot Syrup online?

Senokot Syrup is not classified as a medication and therefore does not require a prescription in order to purchase it. As such, it is readily available to purchase online via Click Pharmacy. However, there may be some verification required as only those suffering from constipation should use the product. Products containing laxatives should be taken with caution as they can cause problems if misused.

Senokot Syrup is available for next day delivery if required – just select this option at the checkout stage of the process.

Senokot Syrup can only be purchased by people aged 18 years or older.

What dose should I choose?

Senokot Syrup comes with the active ingredient senna fruit in calcium sennosides format equivalent to 7.5mg total sennosides (calculated as sennosides B) in one 5ml spoonful. It is only available in this dose, but it can be increased by taking 2 spoonfuls at a time.

It is recommended that adults and children over 12 years of age take two 5ml spoonfuls from the first use to aid the symptoms of constipation.

Children aged 6 to 12 years of age should take one 5ml spoonful.

For children aged 6 years and under, consult your doctor before administering.

Please read the instructions prior to use and ensure you follow them. The instructions will be found in the product packaging when it arrives.

How should I use Senokot Syrup?

For optimal results, adults and children over 12 years of age should take two 5ml spoonfuls before going to bed. It is expected that the benefits of the active ingredient senna fruit will be felt within 8 to 12 hours of using. Repeat the dose the following evening if symptoms persist.

For children aged 6 to 12 years of age, a single spoonful of Senokot Syrup should be taken in the morning to alleviate symptoms.

Speak to your doctor to determine the best course of action for children aged under 6 years of age.

If problems tend to persist for more than 5 days, or there is further pain and discomfort in the abdomen, speak to your doctor.

How does Senokot Syrup work?

The active ingredient in Senokot Syrup is senna fruit in the form of calcium sennosides equivalent to 7.5mg total sennosides (calculated as sennosides B) per 5ml spoonful. This acts as a natural stimulant for the bowel to encourage the movement required to restore the natural cycle of your body. The fruit-based syrup means it tastes good and is easy to swallow and digest to get to the root of the problem.

How long do I use Senokot Syrup for before I notice a difference?

Within 8 to 12 hours of the first use of Senokot Syrup, you should see an improvement in the movement of the digestive system. For adults and children over 12 years of age, this means that when taken as directed (i.e. before bed), a bowel movement should be experienced the next morning. For children aged 6 to 12 years of age who should take the syrup in the morning, they should see the benefit before they go to bed that evening.

If symptoms are not fully eased, continue to use the product for several days, but if problems persist for longer than 5 days, consult your doctor.

Other laxative products are available to alleviate the symptoms of constipation, such as Dulcolax (Bisacodyl) 5mg and Fybogel Hi-Fibre Orange.

Dosage starts at 5mg of the active ingredient Bisacodyl for a single tablet, and it works within a slightly reduced timeframe of 6-12 hours. Bisacodyl is not a naturally occurring stimulant laxative and should not be used on children under 12 years of age.

Fybogel Hi-Fibre Orange, like Senokot Syrup, uses a natural active ingredient to alleviate the symptoms of constipation - Ispaghula Husk BP 3.5g. This is a fibre that will encourage the body to pass the waste matter in a natural way. It comes in sachet format that requires mixing with water in order to take it, and like Senokot Syrup, it can be used on children aged 6 to 12 years old.
