What is Dulcolax
Dulcolax (Bisacodyl) 5mg is a proven remedy for the treatment of constipation. It works as a mild laxative overnight to provide gentle and effective relief when required to allow the body to rediscover its natural rhythm. The unique formula and coating mean the tablets will target only the area in need, to gently stimulate the bowel in periods of sluggishness.
Constipation can occur for a wide variety of reasons and can cause discomfort and distress if the problem persists. A solution such as Dulcolax (Bisacodyl) 5mg can alleviate not only any pain experienced, but as a medicine, you can trust, it can also help to put your mind at rest if you suffer from the condition regularly.
How should I use Dulcolax (Bisacodyl) 5mg?
Dulcolax (Bisacodyl) 5mg comes in tablet form. It is advised to start your treatment by swallowing a single tablet whole (which is a dose of 5mg) with water 30 to 60 minutes before bedtime. The active ingredient (Bisacodyl) will target the part of the bowel in difficulty within 6 to 12 hours of taking it to offer gentle but effective relief of your symptoms of constipation.
If a single tablet is ineffective, the problems are slightly more severe, or you have used Dulcolax tablets before, take two tablets whole (a dose of 10mg) with water, again 30 to 60 minutes before bedtime.
If symptoms tend to persist for longer than 5 days, or you experience abdominal pain, consult your doctor.
How does Dulcolax (Bisacodyl) 5mg work?
The active ingredient in Dulcolax tablets is Bisacodyl. This is known as a stimulant laxative which encourages movement of the intestines, stimulating the muscles in the bowel into action to encourage the waste matter to pass through your system.
The special coating allows the tablets to dissolve in the right part of your body, meaning the active ingredient will target only the affected area.
For How long do I use Dulcolax (Bisacodyl) 5mg before I notice a difference?
The symptoms of constipation should begin to improve within 6 to 12 hours of the first use of Dulcolax tablets. When taken just before bed, the tablet (or tablets) should release the active ingredient in the affected area overnight to ensure you have a normal bowel movement in the morning. If this does not occur, take a second dose that evening (increasing to two tablets or a 10mg dose if required).
For constipation which lasts longer than 5 days, consult your doctor.
What are the side effects of Dulcolax (Bisacodyl) 5mg?
The ingredients, both active and inactive, in Dulcolax tablets can cause side effects. The most common of these include diarrhoea, feeling sick (nausea), vomiting, stomach cramps and other stomach pain, burning feeling in the rectal area.

What is the difference between Dulcolax (Bisacodyl) 5mg and Senokot Senna Constipation Relief / Fybogel Hi-Fibre Orange?
Other types of laxatives are available for the gentle and effective relief of symptoms of constipation, two of which are Senokot Senna Constipation Relief and Fybogel Hi-Fibre Orange.
Senokot Senna Constipation Relief, like Dulcolax, is in tablet form but can take slightly longer to work (8 to 12 hours). Senokot can be used on children as young as 6 years old thanks to its natural active ingredient, senna fruit 154mg. Senna tends to work by stimulating the nerve endings in the bowel to result in their movement of the stool through your system to restore it to its natural function. The recommended dose for Senokot is 2 tablets to start with.
Fybogel Hi-Fibre Orange is also a remedy which uses a naturally derived active ingredient - Ispaghula Husk BP 3.5g. This is a fibre which, when passing through your system, should help to relieve the symptoms of constipation. It comes in drink sachet form to be mixed with 150ml (1/4pt) of cold water. Adults and children over 12 are to use a full sachet in the morning and evening, whereas children aged 6-12 should use 1 teaspoon of the sachet in the morning and evening.
How effective is Dulcolax (Bisacodyl) 5mg?
Dulcolax (Bisacodyl) 5mg is clinically proven to relieve constipation in sufferers thanks to its properties as a stimulant laxative. It will start to work within 6 to 12 hours of administration, which is why it is advised to be taken only in the evening, just before going to bed. The coating on the tablets will ensure it only treats the area in need so that when you get up in the morning, your body’s natural cycle should be restored to normal.
One tablet containing 5mg of the active ingredient, Bisacodyl, should be enough to facilitate bowel movement, but if required, an additional dose can be taken. Start with a single tablet if you have not taken Dulcolax (Bisacodyl) 5mg before. As the tablets are swallowed, they work their way through your system in the night to provide relief the following morning. If the issue is not fully cleared with a single-use, continue taking for a couple of days until the body recovers its rhythm.
