How does it Paracetamol Oral Suspension work?

Paracetamol relieves pain by reducing the production of prostaglandins in the brain and spinal cord.

The body produces prostaglandins in response to injury and certain diseases. One of the actions of prostaglandins is to sensitise nerve endings so that when that area is stimulated, it causes pain, presumably to prevent us from causing further harm to the area.

By reducing the prostaglandins in the brain and spinal cord, it is thought that paracetamol may increase our pain threshold.

Paracetamol does not exhibit anti-inflammatory effects but can be used in children and adults when pain relief is required.

What dose should I choose?

Each 5ml teaspoon of Paracetamol Oral Suspension 120mg/5ml contains 120mg of paracetamol.

This is the designated dosage regimen for babies, infants, and children:

Age 2 months for relief of fever after vaccination 2.5ml every 4 hours and up to 4 times in 24 hours, starting at the time of the vaccination. However, if your baby still needs this medicine two days after receiving the vaccine, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. Do not give to babies less than two months of age.

Age 6 to 12 years 10ml to 20ml every 4 hours and up to 4 times in 24 hours

Paracetamol Oral Suspension 120mg/5ml can also be given to adults who have difficulty swallowing tablets or capsules. Adults may take 20ml every 4 hours and up to 4 times in 24 hours.

How long do I take Paracetamol Oral Suspension 120mg/5ml for before I notice a difference?

Depending on the condition you are suffering from or how severe your pain is, you may need to take paracetamol once to relieve your pain, or you may need to use on a long-term basis. You should consult a healthcare professional (pharmacist or doctor) before going further.

How effective is Paracetamol?

Paracetamol is a suitable analgesic (painkiller) for children but can be given to adults for mild to moderate pain that does not require anti-inflammatory activity.

The body produces prostaglandins in response to injury and certain diseases. One of the actions of prostaglandins is to sensitise nerve endings so that when that area is stimulated, it causes pain, presumably to prevent us from causing further harm to the area.

Paracetamol relieves pain by reducing the production of prostaglandins in the brain and spinal cord.

By reducing the nerve-sensitising prostaglandins in the brain and spinal cord, it is thought that paracetamol may increase our pain threshold so that although the cause of the pain remains, we can feel it less.

Paracetamol reduces fever by affecting an area of the brain that regulates our body temperature (the hypothalamic heat-regulating center).
