Diarrhea and its causes

These are the most common causes of diarrhoea:

  • Ingestion of Infected/contaminated food or water

  • Viral infection such as the common cold/flu, norovirus, or rotavirus. Rotavirus is deemed to be the most common causes of acute diarrhoea in children.

  • Parasites, tiny organisms found in contaminated/infected food or water

  • Drugs like antibiotics, cancer medications, and antacids containing magnesium

  • Food allergies and sensitivities, which are problems digesting certain ingredients or foods. An example is lactose intolerance.

  • Crohn's disease

  • irritable bowel syndrome

Some people also get diarrhoea after stomach surgery, because sometimes the surgeries can cause food to move through your digestive system more quickly.

Sometimes no cause can be found. If your diarrhoea goes away within a few days, finding the cause is usually not necessary.

  • Stomach cramps or pain in the abdomen
