What is Levocetirizine and what is it used for?

Levocetirizine is a prescription antihistamine used to treat allergy symptoms such as sneezing, runny or itchy nose, watery eyes, and skin irritation. It contains the active ingredient levocetirizine dihydrochloride and is commonly prescribed for hay fever (seasonal allergic rhinitis) and other allergic conditions.

How does Levocetirizine work?

Hay fever happens when your body reacts to pollen from plants and trees. When pollen comes into contact with areas like your nose, eyes, throat, or mouth, your body releases a chemical called histamine. This causes symptoms such as watery, itchy eyes, a runny or blocked nose, and a sore throat.

Antihistamines like Levocetirizine block the effects of histamine on the body, helping to reduce these allergic symptoms.

levocetirizine ingredients

Levocetirizine tablets contain 5mg of the active ingredient levocetirizine dihydrochloride.

They also include inactive ingredients such as microcrystalline cellulose, lactose monohydrate, colloidal anhydrous silica, magnesium stearate, hypromellose (E464), titanium dioxide (E171), and macrogol 400.

Levocetirizine alternatives

Several antihistamines are available to treat hay fever. Over-the-counter options you can buy from UK pharmacies include Loratadine, Cetirizine, Piriton, and Periactin.

Other treatments include nasal sprays such as Pirinase Nasal Spray and eye drops like Optrex Itchy Eyes, both available from our online pharmacy.

Some antihistamines require a prescription, including Levocetirizine, Telfast, and Desloratadine. More targeted prescription treatments include Optilast Eye Drops and nasal sprays like Avamys.

No, you cannot buy Levocetirizine over-the-counter in the UK. It is only available with a prescription from a doctor or pharmacist to ensure it is safe and suitable for you.

What is the difference between Cetirizine and Levocetirizine?

Levocetirizine is a more targeted form of Cetirizine, often working faster and with fewer side effects. Both are antihistamines used to treat allergies, but Levocetirizine may provide better relief for some people.

How long does it take for Levocetirizine to work?

Levocetirizine usually begins to relieve allergy symptoms within 1 to 3 hours after taking a dose. For the best results, it should be taken daily, and full relief may take a few days of regular use.

Can I drink alcohol while taking Levocetirizine?

It’s best to avoid alcohol while taking Levocetirizine, as alcohol can increase drowsiness and dizziness.
