What is Efracea?

Efracea is a prescription medication containing doxycycline 40mg in a modified-release (MR) formulation. It is used by adults to treat the inflammatory lesions of rosacea, helping to reduce redness and breakouts. The modified-release formula ensures a steady absorption of the medication, minimising potential side effects.

How does Efracea work to treat rosacea?

Efracea treats rosacea by reducing inflammation and preventing flare-ups. Its 40mg modified-release doxycycline formulation helps control the body's immune response, easing redness, papules and breakouts which are common symptoms of rosacea. It works by inhibiting enzymes that contribute to inflammation, reducing the activity of certain bacteria linked to rosacea, and preventing the release of chemicals that trigger skin irritation.

Efracea ingredients

Each Capsule contains 40mg of doxycycline (monohydrate) as the active ingredient.

Other ingredients include:

  • Hypromellose
  • Sucrose
  • Maize starch
  • Talc
  • Magnesium stearate
  • Gelatin (capsule shell)
  • Titanium dioxide (E171)
  • Iron oxides (E172)

Patient Information Leaflet

Always read the Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) before taking Efracea. It contains important information on how to use the medication, its side effects, and necessary precautions.

How to take Efracea capsules

The usual dosage of Efracea is one capsule per day, usually taken in the morning with a full glass of water. Swallow it whole without crushing or chewing. It is best taken on an empty stomach, at least one hour before or two hours after meals, to ensure proper absorption.

After taking Efracea, avoid lying down for at least 30 minutes to reduce the risk of irritation. Do not take it with dairy products, antacids, or supplements containing calcium, magnesium, or iron, as these can interfere with absorption. Always follow your doctor instructions regarding the duration of treatment for the best results.
