Levonelle is a type of emergency contraception known as a morning after pill. It can be effective at preventing pregnancy when taken within three days of unprotected sex. Despite being known as a ‘morning after pill’, you do not have to wait until the next morning to take it. In fact, the sooner it is taken after unsafe sex, the more effective it is likely to be.

Why choose Levonelle?

If you’ve had unprotected sex or your method of contraception has let you down (e.g. a condom has split or you have missed a contraceptive pill), Levonelle can be used to prevent an unplanned pregnancy. This particular form of emergency contraception is up to 95% effective if taken within 24 hours of an episode of unsafe intercourse. However, its effectiveness decreases when treatment is delayed. When taken between 25-48 hours after sex, it is 85% effective and when treatment does not occur until between 49-72 hours after sex, its effectiveness falls to 58%. If it works, it can take the stress and worry out of a potentially life-changing incident. If you are concerned about finding yourself in an emergency situation without access to a pharmacy, it is possible to get the morning after pill and keep it on standby.

What dose should I choose?

Levonelle is prescribed as a single tablet. It contains 1.5mg of levonorgestrel, which is a second generation of a synthetic progestogen called progestin, an active ingredient in many hormonal contraceptives. In case of vomiting or diarrhoea within 2 to 3 hours after taking the pill, the dose should be repeated.

How should I take Levonelle?

Levonelle must be taken within the first 12 to 24 hours for optimum results, and no later than 72 hours.

If you have passed the 72 hours window, then it is not too late. Instead you can try EllaOne, which can be taken up to 120 hours after an episode of unprotected sex.

How does Levonelle work?

Depending on what stage of your menstrual cycle you’re in, it works by either inhibiting the release of an egg from the ovary during ovulation or by interfering with the fertilisation of the egg.

What are the side effects of Levonelle?

Levonelle can cause abdominal pain, headaches, nausea, tiredness and irregular bleeding. Less commonly, breast tenderness, dizziness and vomiting can be experienced. However, in most cases symptoms are not long-lasting or severe. If you are concerned about symptoms or if side effects do not disappear after 48 hours, consult your doctor or one of our specialists at Click.
