Dry Skin

What is Dry Skin?

Dry skin, or xerosis, happens when your skin loses too much water or natural oils. It can cause rough patches, scaling, itching, or cracks. While dry skin can occur anywhere, it’s most common on the hands, feet, arms, and legs.

Causes of Dry Skin

Dry skin can result from:

  • Cold or dry weather
  • Hot showers or baths
  • Harsh soaps or detergents
  • Dehydration
  • Aging, which reduces natural oil production
  • Skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis

Symptoms of Dry Skin

You may notice:

  • Tightness or rough texture
  • Flaking or peeling
  • Redness or irritation
  • Cracks that may bleed
  • Itching or stinging

How to prevent Dry Skin

Simple steps can help keep your skin healthy and hydrated:

  • Moisturize daily with an emollient or cream
  • Use gentle, fragrance-free cleansers
  • Take shorter, lukewarm showers
  • Pat skin dry instead of rubbing
  • Use a humidifier during dry weather
  • Drink plenty of water

How to treat Dry Skin

Effective treatments include:

  • Emollient creams & ointments (e.g., E45 Cream, Cetraben) – help restore the skin barrier and lock in moisture.
  • Bath additives & soap substitutes – cleanse without stripping natural oils.
  • Medicated creams (if prescribed) – for dry skin linked to eczema or dermatitis.

If dry skin doesn’t improve with home care or becomes painful, see a GP for further advice.
