What is Elleste Solo

Elleste Solo Tablets are a prescription-only hormone replacement therapy (HRT) that contains oestrogen only. Elleste Solo is a form of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for oestrogen deficiency symptoms in post-and peri-menopausal women. HRT medications may be used before, during and after menopause

Hormone levels drop as a woman moves towards menopause, bringing several uncomfortable or unpleasant symptoms such as irregular periods, vaginal itching/dryness, hot flushes, chills, mood swings, reduced sex drive, night sweats, sleep problems, discomfort during sex, recurrent urinary tract infections, weight gain and slowed metabolism, heart palpitations, and osteoporosis. HRT may ease these symptoms.

How effective are Elleste Solo tablets?

Elleste Solo relieves post-and peri-menopausal symptoms even at low doses. Therefore, you may take it short or long-term, depending on your condition and where you are in your menopause journey. The drug may also effectively prevent osteoporosis for women with a heightened risk of fractures if they cannot take any other form of prevention medication. This can occur as the bone-strengthening and female hormone oestrogen decreases during menopause.

The effects of the Elleste Solo kick in relatively quickly, with many women experiencing the benefits within just a few weeks of daily use.

Why choose Elleste Solo tablets?

Elleste Solo may play a massive role in helping women feel better despite being seriously affected by symptoms of the menopause. By replacing the hormone oestrogen, the medication helps to stop crippling symptoms such as hot flushes, strong heartbeat, osteoporosis, dryness of the eyes, mood swings, reduced sex drive, vaginal dryness, irritability, insomnia, and pain during sex.

In addition, HRT treatments such as Elleste Solo 1mg or Elleste Solo 2mg also support menopausal low moods and anxiety.

What is contained in Elleste Solo tablets?

The active ingredient in the Elleste Solo Tablet is a natural oestrogen called estradiol hemihydrate (previously oestradiol hemihydrate).

The inactive ingredients are:

  • Lactose monohydrate
  • Maize starch
  • Povidone 25
  • Talc (purified)
  • Magnesium stearate

The ingredients in the film-coating material are:

  • Hypromellose (E464)
  • Titanium dioxide (E171)
  • Macrogol 400
  • Elleste Solo 2mg has the extra ingredient sunset yellow (E110)

If you are allergic to the active and other ingredients, consult your doctor; they can help you source a safe alternative treatment.

How do Elleste Solo tablets work?

The primary purpose of HRT tablets is to help replenish oestrogen levels. Elleste Solo works by increasing oestrogen levels to counteract the effects of menopause. All versions of the treatment supplement the body with oestrogen to compensate for its reduced capability to produce this hormone after menopause.

As menopause approaches, the ovaries produce less oestrogen resulting in symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, irregular menstruation patterns and vaginal dryness. Estradiol replaces these lost hormones, helping to ease these issues.

Oestrogen has several functions in the body. While it is beneficial overall, too much can cause the womb lining to grow dangerously, increasing the risk of endometrial cancer. In addition, oestrogen causes the growth of the womb lining for women who haven't had a hysterectomy. If this grows without the progesterone stopping it, the result may be endometrial cancer. Progesterone (norethisterone) is in this combination treatment to combat the risk.

How long does it take Elleste Solo to work?

You may start seeing the positive effects of Elleste Solo within a few weeks of using it; however, it may take up to 3 months to see the full benefits.

Elleste Solo MX vs Elleste Solo

Elleste Solo MX and Elleste Solo are both oestrogen HRT preparations. Elleste Solo is a tablet available in 1mg and 2mg doses, whereas Elleste Solo MX40 and MX80 are transdermal patches containing the same hormone, oestrogen. You need to apply transdermal patches twice a week; they release a steady dose of the hormone into the bloodstream. Transdermal patches work as effectively as tablets but pose fewer side effects. Discuss with your GP which treatment option is more suitable for you.

Elleste Solo vs other forms of HRT

HRT is available in many different forms.

Premarin is an oestrogen-only HRT treatment available as a tablet and a vaginal cream; however, it contains conjugated oestrogens instead of oestradiol. Conjugated oestrogens are a mixture of different oestrogens (e.g., oestriol, oestrone, etc.) and take longer than pure oestradiol to get absorbed. Furthermore, Premarin is only suitable for individuals who have undergone a hysterectomy or have an intrauterine system (IUS) fitted.

Evorel is another oestrogen-only HRT treatment option. It is available as transdermal patches, which can be worn on the skin and pose lesser side effects than oral tablets.

For individuals who haven't menstruated for at least a year without having undergone a hysterectomy or an IUS fitted, HRT containing both oestrogen and progesterone are a better option as they do not induce menstruation. These include oral tablets such as Kliovance, Elleste Duet Conti and Climesse and transdermal patches such as Evorel Conti.

Elleste Duet and Trisequens are suitable for women still having periods because they provide a cyclical dose of progesterone. Transdermal patches containing cyclical combined HRT include Evorel Sequi.

Alternatively, an oral tablet that works similarly to combined HRT is Livial. It is a selective steroid in nature which works by causing the activation of oestrogen and progesterone receptors. As a result, it has a lower risk of causing breast cancer.

Lifestyle changes to improve Menopause symptoms

Exercise regularly and include activities such as walking or running. Exercising will help keep your bones strong, prevent weight gain and reduce stress, which are all common problems in menopause.

Practising yoga and meditation are also beneficial in reducing the anxiety and stress that accompany many women entering this new stage in life.

Ensure that you're getting plenty of sleep. Night sweats are common in menopause and can hamper a good night's sleep. Wearing lightweight nightclothes and using a fan or air conditioning can help you sleep comfortably.

In addition, eat a healthy diet with lots of fruits and vegetables, calcium-rich foods like yoghurt, cheese and milk, and wholegrain bread and rice. Furthermore, staying hydrated is critical, especially because menopausal women tend to lose more fluid through hot flushes and night sweats. Dehydration can also lead to headaches and anxiety, adding to menopausal symptoms.

What dose should I choose?

Elleste Solo is a cyclical treatment – the tablets in a cycle contain estradiol. Each film-coated tablet contains estradiol (Elleste Solo 1mg or 2 mg). This causes a regular period and reduces your risk of breast cancer. Women with hysterectomy should take the HRT tablets continuously. In women with a uterus, a progestogen must be added for 12-14 days each cycle to oppose the production of oestrogen-stimulated hyperplasia of the endometrium.

  • Elleste Solo 1mg Tablet is a white, round, biconvex tablet marked with 01 on one side.
  • Elleste Solo 2 mg Tablet is an orange, round, biconvex tablet marked with 02 on one side.

How should I take Elleste Solo tablets?

Women taking Elleste Solo should take one tablet daily with a drink with or without a meal. Take the tablet at a fixed time each day for the best results. If you remember to take a missed dose within 12 hours, then have it; if you remember within 12 hours of the next dose, wait until then. Do not double up or take two within 12 hours of each other. Try to:

  • Take a tablet at the same time daily
  • Take the tablet whole with water
  • Follow the direction of the arrows on the strip until all pills are finished.
  • Do not take a break between packs

You do not need to take breaks between your pack of Elleste Solo. However, have your treatment reviewed at least once a year to ensure you are still using the best form of medication and receiving the most significant benefits from it.

For how long can I take the Elleste Solo tablets?

You may take the Elleste Solo consecutively every day. However, though it is highly recommended, you should still have this reviewed annually at least once with your GP.

  • For the management of menopause, patients will usually be prescribed at least 3 months of treatment.
  • In the case of premature menopause, HRT treatments such as Elleste Duet Conti are recommended until normal menopause and around 5 to 10 years after age 50.
  • Premenopausal women aged 50+ may be prescribed Elleste Solo Tablet for around 5 years to ease symptoms of menopause.
