Thousands of people struggle with the challenge of this respiratory disease every day. Asthma symptoms can range from mild to fatal and it includes a wide a variety of issues including, but not limited to
Symptoms of asthma can appear right away or several hours after exposure to certain triggers including pollen, pollution, pet fur or workplace chemicals though each person will have different triggers. As such, having an asthma management plan in place will assist you in preventing asthmatic attacks or support you in the case of an attack occurring. One of the first lines in defence against asthma is a reliever inhaler such as Ventolin which is is a bronchodilator designed to relax the muscles in the airways and in turn, increase the amount of air flowing to the lungs with each breath.
Different people will find different variations of the reliever inhaler more effective for them than others. Ventolin is effective in quickly relieving symptoms such as wheezing or a full blown asthma attack whereas other people may use it prior to working out or before being exposed to anything which can cause an allergic reaction such as animals. Once used, the medication will get to work right away to relieve your breathing difficulties and will continue to work for up to around 5 hours.
Ventolin can be used in children as young as 4 making it a good option for young children suffering from asthma. You can also use it every half an hour to an hour for anywhere up to 3 hours if needed in an emergency without risk of major side effects although this should be confirmed by your doctor.
It is also one of the oldest inhalers on the market after salbutamol was launched under the brand name of Ventolin in 1969 making it a well trusted and highly studied product.
Ventolin’s active ingredient is salbutamol sulfate.
The inactive ingredient is propellant HFA-134a
Prime the inhaler prior to use by removing the mouthpiece cap and shake the canister well. Spray it away from you once. Repeat this shake and spray action 4 times in total.
If you do not use your inhaler for more than 2 weeks, or you drop it, then you will be required to prime it again as you did the first time it was used.
Known as a short-acting beta 2 agonist, Ventolin’s active ingredient salbutamol works by relaxing the muscles in the airways allowing them to open after they have tightened due to an allergic-type response to a trigger.
By stimulating receptors called beta 2 receptors in the lungs and causing the airways to widen, it is made easier for the sufferer to breathe and stops asthma symptoms and attacks.
There is only a certain number of doses of Ventolin you should take within a 24 hour period. It should be limited to one dose (either one or two puffs per dose as directed by your doctor) every 4 to 6 hours making it 5 or 6 doses in a day. Knowing this can help you to avoid an overdose which can be fatal. Always follows your doctors directions on how much and for how long you take this medication.
Negative side effects to Ventolin can include shakiness or trembling in the hands, legs and feet as well as a dry mouth, cough or dizziness. If you experience these side effects or any other unwanted after effects it is wise to seek advice as to whether this treatment needs to be changed or if it is just a mild reaction to the medication which your body will get used to. You can book a free online appointment with a doctor at Click Pharmacy any time to talk about your concerns.
If you experience any very serious side effects including chest pain, irregular heartbeat or a sense of confusion, seek medical help right away.
Although it is very rare to have an allergic reaction to this medication if you find that you experience a rash, swelling of the tongue, throat and/or lips or have further difficulty breathing then stop using the treatment and get help.
You need to let your doctor know if you are taking any other medicines including vitamins and herbal supplements. Be sure to also mention any of the following:
