Symbicort

star star star star star

The effects of asthma can vary from mild to severe and even life threatening. The condition narrows the airways and causes them to produce mucus which means that not only can breathing become laboured, but coughing can be triggered which makes it even more difficult to take in air.

Although there is no cure for it, asthma symptoms and attacks can be managed and by working with your doctor, you can find different ways to recognise your triggers and find effective ways to deal with it when inflammation occurs. One of the first lines of defence against asthma is a preventer inhaler such as Symbicort which helps to open up tight airways and reduce irritation.

How effective is Symbicort?

When used daily as directed this medication is very effective at longterm management of asthma. It is not designed to work quickly as with a reliever inhaler such as Ventolin; instead its active ingredients, budesonide and formoterol, reduce swelling of the airways as well as relax the muscles around them for up to 12 hours of relief at a time.

Asthma control can be seen within 15 minutes of using your inhaler and the full benefits of using Symbicort regularly each day for asthma maintenance can take up to 2 weeks after which, with ongoing, regular treatment usage, you should be able to effectively control your symptoms and attacks.

Why choose Symbicort?

Rather than looking for an effective longterm management solution most patients tend to rely more heavily on their reliever inhalers which contain a short-acting beta agonist (SABA). Symbicort can not only lower your reliance on your SABA but it can also prevent patients experiencing asthma attacks at all when used correctly.

Can I buy Symbicort Online?

Symbicort requires a prescription to be purchased but with Click Pharmacy there is no need to book an appointment to see your doctor. You can instead fill in our online health questionnaire and our in-house doctors will assess whether this is the best medication for your situation. If it is approved you can receive your prescription and make your purchase right away and receive your treatment to your address by next day delivery.

If another medication is believed to be more beneficial this will be discussed with you and you can book a free and confidential online appointment to advise you of your options.

Once you have your prescription you can re-order your treatment as and when required without filling in the questionnaire again.

What is contained in Symbicort?

The active ingredients in Symbicort are micronized budesonide and micronized formoterol fumarate dihydrate

The inactive ingredients are hydrofluroalkane (HFA 227), povidone K25 USP and polyethylene glycol 1000 NF.

How should I take Symbicort?

Shake your Symbicort inhaler for 5 seconds prior to use each time. Remove the mouthpiece cap and ensure it is clear to use inside.

  • Before using the inhaler for the first time release 2 test sprays (away from you) with a 5 second shake between each. If the inhaler is dropped or unused for 7 days you will need to repeat this process.
  • Place your thumb at the bottom of the inhaler and your index finger on top.
  • Breathe out fully before placing your lips around the mouthpiece to create a seal.
  • Begin to breathe in slowly and as you do, press down on the inhaler firmly to release your dose.
  • Continue your in breath and hold it in for 10 seconds or as long as feels comfortable before slowly exhaling.
  • Release the inhaler. If you are taking a second puff, shake the inhaler for 5 seconds and repeat.
  • Replace the mouthpiece as soon as possible after use and rinse your mouth out and/or clean your teeth.
How does Symbicort work?

Through the use of a combined bronchodilator and corticosteroid turboinhaler, Symbicort reduces inflammation and opens the airways.

Corticosteroids are naturally produced hormones created by the adrenal glands and control inflammatory responses such as, in the case of an asthma sufferer, an allergic response to pollen or pollution. Budesonide, which is part of this corticosteroid family, is a man-made version of this hormone which when breathed in via an inhaler absorbs into the reactive cells and decreases the swelling causing the breathing difficulties.

Formoterol is a long-acting beta agonist, also known as a bronchodilator, and it opens the airways by relaxing the muscles around them helping to ease laboured breathing. As a long-acting medication, its relaxation function takes up to 3 minutes to work but can last for up to 12 hours as opposed to the short-acting variations which last only up to 5 hours.

How long can I take Symbicort for?

Symbicort can be used on a longterm basis with up to 2 puffs a day to support the maintenance of your asthma and to help prevent attacks.

It is crucial you review your asthma with your doctor at least once a year to ensure you are on the most effective form of treatment.
