An asthma attack can occur due to the body triggering when coming into contact with certain allergens such as pollution and chemicals in the workplace or pet fur and pollen. Without management, asthma can be very dangerous and even life-threatening, as without the correct medication the airways can constrict and stop the breath getting down to the lungs which can be fatal.

A preventer inhaler such as Serevent, which can be purchased as either an Evohaler or an Accuhaler, can help the body stop reacting to triggers and keep the airways to the lungs opens for up to 12 hours at a time.

How effective is Serevent?

Serevent effectively opens the airways within 10 to 20 minutes and keeps them relaxed and open for up to 12 hours. It is designed to prevent breathlessness and will not be effective once you are already wheezing as this requires a reliever inhaler such as salbutamol. To get the benefits of Serevent, you must use it regularly without missing a dose and as directed by your doctor.

Why choose Serevent?

Serevent can be used regularly and as a longterm treatment for preventing asthma symptoms and attacks being triggered by allergens. It is also beneficial to be used prior to exercise to stop exercise induced asthma attacks or before bed to reduce and even prevent nocturnal attacks.

Serevent inhalers can also be used in children as young as 4 and in women who are pregnant or breastfeeding though this should be discussed with the doctors before going ahead.

Can I buy Serevent Online?

Serevent is a prescription-only medication so you will be asked to fill in a medical questionnaire before our doctors can approve you for treatment. Once approved you will be able to purchase your inhaler online via Click Pharmacy and have it sent quickly and discreetly directly to your address by next day delivery where possible.

Once you have your prescription you will be able to buy your medication again without redoing the health assessment.

What is contained in Serevent?

The active ingredient in each dose is salmeterol

The inactive ingredient is norflurane.

How should I take Serevent?

The Evohaler and Accuhaler are the two methods for using Serevent and you can discuss with your doctor which option will be most beneficial for you to ensure you are receiving the full dose with every puff:

The Seretide Evohaler delivers your medication in the form of a fine spray. Place your first finger on the top of the inhaler and your thumb on the base. Breathe out fully, place your mouth over the mouthpiece, before beginning to breathe in deeply and slowly as you press down on the top of the inhaler to receive your metered dose. Hold your breath for up to 10 seconds if possible then breath out slowly.

The Seretide Accuhaler gives a dose of the medication in the form of a dry powder. The inhaler has pre-filled blister packs within it. Slide the lever on the side of the inhaler to pierce the pack before breathing out as far as possible and placing your mouth over the mouthpiece. Breathe in steadily through your mouth to receive your dose, hold your breathe for 5 - 10 second and breathe out slowly.

Ensure you replace the mouthpiece cap once finished each time.

A build up of medication in the mouth can cause you to develop oral thrush over time so rinse your mouth out and brush your teeth to clear away any residue right after use.

How does Serevent work?

Salmeterol, the active ingredient in Serevent, is designed for ongoing prevention of asthmatic symptoms and attacks by keeping the airways open. The ingredient is a long-acting beta 2 agonist which works on the lung’s receptors called beta 2 receptors. When salmeterol stimulates these receptors the muscles around the airways relax and open. It then works to keep them open for up to 12 hours, as opposed to the short acting beta 2 agonists which only last for up to 5 hours.

If you find Serevent is not easing your tight chest or wheeziness then it is important to book an appointment with your doctor to discuss this as it could be that your asthma is getting worse and you may require a large dose or a different medication.

How long can I take Serevent for?

You must continue to use your Serevent for as long as your doctor prescribes it and use it regularly. As long as you do not experience any allergic reactions to the ingredients you are safe to use it for as long as it is right for your asthma management programme.

What are the side effects of Serevent?

The most common side effects of Serevent include shakiness, heart palpitations muscle cramps and headaches. A sense of nervousness can also occur. None of these should be severe enough to stop you using the medication and your doctor will have weighed up the possible side effects against your need for the treatment. If you feel the side effects are concerning then you can book an appointment online with a doctor at Click Pharmacy at any time.

If you have heart disease, arrhythmias, high blood pressure, hyperthyroidism or diabetes, Serevent should be used with caution.

Other Warnings to consider

There are other medications you should not take alongside Serevent and it is important your doctor knows what other treatments you are using prior to prescribing it. This includes herbal supplements and vitamins. Beta-blockers cannot be used alongside Serevent as it can have the opposite of the desired effect and narrow the airways further.

Some inhalers may cause an increase in your wheezing after using them which is known as paradoxical bronchospasm. If this occurs, the medication should stop being used and you must let your doctor know so they can find you an alternative option.
