Flixotide

Asthma symptoms most commonly begin in childhood though it can begin at any age due to factors such as triggers such as a respiratory infection, irritants such as mould and smoke or allergies though the exact reason is not known.

With around 1 in 12 adults being treated for this long term respiratory condition, if someone begins suffering from breathing issues at any age it is vital to get checked by the doctor as quickly as possible. Without the correct medications, the lungs struggle to work and eventually the breathing difficulties and wheezing can become life threatening.

One aspect of an asthma management programme is the use of a daily preventer inhaler such as Flixotide which comes in the form of an Evohaler or Accuhaler. When used every day as prescribed this type of steroid medication, designed to treat mucus build up and inflammation in the lungs and airways, will help to prevent asthmatic symptoms and attacks in the long run.

How effective is Flixotide?

Flixotide is known as a preventer inhaler. These forms of inhalers take a little longer to open up the airways but the effects of it last far longer than the more immediate reliever inhalers. As such, if your asthma has not been managed by a reliever inhaler alone and you need it more than twice a week, then you would also be prescribed a preventer inhaler such as Flixotide for effective longterm management.

When used correctly each day as directed, Flixotide is highly effective at preventing asthma symptoms and even full attacks from occurring as it relieves the lungs from reacting to triggers with each use. It can take up to 7 days of use to reach its full effect but its regular use will help sufferers to manage their asthma in a far more controlled manner than simply relying on a reliever inhaler alone.

Why choose Flixotide?

Flixotide comes in two formats, the Accuhaler and Evohaler. Whilst the Evohaler is used in the same way as a regular inhaler with the user coordinating their in breath with the release of the spray, the Accuhaler releases its dose in the form of a powder first which you then breathe in when you are ready rather than synchronising your breath with each puff. Therefore, for anyone who is not confident in using a regular inhaler and worries they may not be using it correctly, the Accuhaler is a great alternative as it ensures you are taking in the full dose necessary.

Flixotide can be used in patients as young as 1 to help control asthma symptoms and, as long as it is used under the doctor’s direction, it is also considered to be safe to be used in pregnant and breastfeeding women.

Can I buy Flixotide Online?

This medication can only be bought with a prescription and as such you will be prompted to fill in a medical health questionnaire. Your answers will be assessed by our in-house doctors who can approve you for this medication and give you a prescription. If, from your answers, they feel this would not be the most appropriate option for your asthma management based on factors such as an allergy to ingredients, they will advise you on alternatives which would be preferable.

Once you have your prescription you can purchase your medication online and it will be sent directly to your address. Once you have a prescription you do not need to fill in the questionnaire again for this product and can simply purchase your medication as and when you require new medication.

What is contained in Flixotide?

The active ingredient in a Flixotide inhaler is fluticasone propionate.

The inactive ingredient is norflurane.

How should I take Flixotide?

The Evohaler can be used in the same manner as a regular inhaler.

  • Breathing out as far as possible, place the mouthpiece into your mouth and create a seal with your lips.
  • Begin to breathe in slowly and as you do release the medication by pressing on the top of the Evohaler. Breathe the mist down into your lungs and hold your breath in for up to 10 seconds.
  • Release your breath slowly, replace the cap over the mouthpiece right away if you are not taking a second puff, and then continue to breathe as normal.

You can use a product called a spacer with this form of inhaler which makes it easier for anyone who struggles to breathe in and press down on the canister at the same time.

The Accuhaler releases a dry powder version of your medication. Pre-filled blister packs are contained in the inhaler and by sliding the lever on the side of the pack you open a blister. Your medicine is then ready to be inhaled.

Place the Accuhaler to your lips and breathe in slowly and deeply.

Whether you are using the Evohaler or Accuhaler it is important to rinse your mouth and clean your teeth after each use to ensure any stray medication does not remain in your mouth causing issues such as oral thrush.

How does Flixotide work?

Flixotide is a steroid medication with the active ingredient fluticasone from the corticosteroid family which is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands naturally. Fluticasone is a man-made version of this hormone which is designed to lower inflammation in the cells within the lungs and airways.

When the lungs are reacting, they release a chemical which causes the inflammation. When the medication is breathed down into the lungs it stops the cells having this allergic reaction to triggers such as pollen resulting in asthma symptoms.

How long can I take Flixotide for?

This is a longterm medication to be used daily either once or twice a day as directed. When you first begin taking a preventer inhaler you may be placed on a higher dosage to help bring your asthma under control as quickly as possible. Flixotide can take a week or so for the full benefits to kick in. Once your symptoms are back under control and you no longer have to use your reliever inhaler as regularly, then the dose of Flixotide will be decreased over time to the lowest effective dose possible. If you stop using Flixotide your breathing issues will most likely return so it is important to keep using it.

It is vital you have your asthma and asthma medications reviewed at least once a year once you are on a steady management programme to ensure your treatments are the most beneficial for your situation.

What are the side effects of Flixotide?

Side effects of Flixotide can vary from patient to patient though inhaled steroids tend to incur far fewer side effects than other medications including orally taken steroids.

The most common issue people find after beginning to use a preventer inhaler daily such as Flixotide is oral thrush. This can be avoided by washing your mouth out and cleaning your teeth after every use. If you do develop this infection your doctor can prescribe an anti-fungal treatment. Another common side effect which can develop is a hoarse voice.

Very rare side effects to come from using this type of medication include changes in mood, depression, sleep disturbances and glaucoma. If you notice any issues with your health, including blurred vision after using Flixotide consult your GP or Click Pharmacy doctor right away.

Other Warnings to consider

Children using a corticosteroid such as Flixotide as a long term treatment can experience issues with their growth being slowed. Ensure you review your child’s growth with your doctor regularly during this time.

Be sure to let your Click Pharmacy doctor know about any other medication you are using before beginning to use Flixotide, especially medicines which contain corticosteroids or steroids for issues such as hay fever or eczema.
