Why is Eye care important?
In order to have a healthy brain, you need to have healthy eyes. Most of the functions in an individual’s life consist of the use of the eyes. That is why it is necessary to practice general eye care. By doing so, you can not only protect your vision but evade risks of developing severe eye conditions such as glaucoma.
Particularly, when it comes to eye care, infections tend to be the most common hurdle that one has to face. However, there are plenty of ways to avoid, treat, and relieve such conditions.
What can I do to take care of my eyes?
You should begin with the basic eye care steps and incorporate the steps into your routine. Firstly, make sure that you get enough shut-eye. Avoid unnecessary contact with your eyes and try to avoid using expired makeup. Ensure that you are not around cigarette smoke and that you are hydrated. Also, get regular eye checkups. You can practice the 20-20-20 rule, too.
However, when eye infections occur, make sure that you are able to identify the condition and take proper steps to tend to your eyes.
What are the symptoms of eye infections?
Although the symptoms tend to vary according to the type of eye infection one encounters, the initial signs are the same. They are:
- Eye pain
- Itching
- Eye discharge
- Swollen eyes
- Changes in vision like blurred vision
What are some common causes of eye infections?
There are various different causes of eye infections, and while some of them tend to go away on their own in a matter of days, others tend to stick around and cause problems. That is why it is essential to get any type of irritation that occurs in the eye checked out as soon as possible.
Allergies
The most basic cause of any sort of eye irritation can be an allergic reaction. Whenever an irritating substance makes contact with a person’s body, the immune system reacts. In order to fight off the allergens, the body is forced to release histamines. Such histamines lead to the enlargement of blood vessels in the eyes. As a result, the eyes become red, itchy, and swollen.
Blepharitis
Blepharitis means inflamed eyelid. It is a prevalent eye condition that causes the eyelid to become inflamed and red. In addition to a red, swollen eyelid, blepharitis may also cause a burning sensation, itching, increased sensitivity to light, and production of excessive tears.
Conjunctivitis
Conjunctivitis means pink eye. As we all know, pink eye is one of the most common eye infections, especially among the age group of children. It appears when the conjunctiva (the thin, translucent membrane that encircles the white of the eye and lines the eyelids) gets infected. This leads to the blood vessels inside becoming irritated and swollen. This causes the eye to appear pink or red. Often, the eyelids produce a sticky discharge which can cause the eyelashes to stick together.
Dry Eye
As the name suggests, dry eye is when the eyes do not produce enough tears, which cause the eye to become dehydrated. In addition to the lack of tears, dry eye can also occur when the eye makes tears that do not contain the lipid part. Eyes require sufficient and well-functioning tears to be healthy. The dry eye symptoms include stinging or burning sensations along with tons of tears followed by dryness. Sometimes, mucus discharge also occurs.
Eye Injury
Any type of trauma or injury to the eye can lead to red, bloodshot eyes. The commonly used term is an eye injury. When an injury occurs, the blood vessels in the eye dilate to allow blood to get to the injured area. This can help the injured area to heal quicker. However, the main reason for the red-eye is the open blood vessels.
Although, when eye injuries include corneal abrasions (meaning that there are scratches to the eye’s surface), puncture wounds, or chemical burns, it may be wise to get immediate medical attention as such injuries are classified as medical emergencies.
Glaucoma
In most cases, glaucoma appears gradually and often does not exhibit any types of symptoms at first. However, acute or severe glaucoma can be a sight-threatening condition that requires urgent medical attention. The earliest symptoms include sudden, painful bright-red eyes, along with perceiving halos around lights. Also, vision loss and nausea can be the telling symptoms.
What are the complications of eye infections?
You would be relieved to hear that most of the causes of eye infections never result in serious complications. However, it is vital to get the infection treated as soon as possible as an untreated eye infection could possibly result in permanent damage to the eye. This could lead to vision loss or impairment.
What kind of treatment is available for eye infections?
Once you have received your diagnosis, the doctor will prescribe treatment to help alleviate your symptoms. The treatment would most likely consist of:
- Steroid eye drops or medicine
- Antimicrobial medications (eye drops, tablets, or topical medication for your eye)
- Prescription eye drops for specific conditions
- Laser procedure (in severe cases)
How long does it take for eye care treatment to work?
With prescription eye care ointment, you see improvement in a matter of days. It will take about two days to show positive results, and your eye infection will be entirely cured by the fifth day.
Are there any side effects of eye care treatment?
An individual is at very low risk for side effects of eye care treatment. As a matter of fact, a severe allergic reaction is rare, too. However, if you notice any sort of irregularities that occur once you have started using the ointment/drops, immediately halt the use of the treatment and consult your primary physician. Look out for the following symptoms:
- Rash
- Itching or swelling (especially of the face region)
- Severe dizziness
- Fainting spells
- Trouble breathing
