Detrusitol (Tolterodine)Tablets

When a person unintentionally passes urine this is known as incontinence and presentsin a number of ways:

  • when the bladder is under stress, for example when you cough or sneeze, and the pressure forces the urine out
  • with an intense urge which comes on suddenly
  • due to chronic urinary retention where a patient is unable to empty the bladder completely when they use the toilet
  • total incontinence, when the bladder is unable to hold urine and frequently leaks.

It is important to seek help from your doctor if you begin to notice any of these forms of incontinence as it can be treated in several ways including antispasmodic tablets such as Detrusitol.

If approved, you will be given a prescription and you can purchase your treatment right away. It will be sent in discreet packaging via next day delivery to your chosen address.

How effective is Detrusitol?

Detrusitol was the first agent designed specifically to treat an overactive bladder. It is in the family of medicines known as antispasmodics which stop the involuntary muscle contraction in the wall of the bladder which causes incontinence.

In studies, Detrusitol’s active ingredient tolterodine was found to be as effective when taken twice a day as its market competitor which was taken 3 times a day. It was also shown to improve urge incontinence dramatically as well as increase bladder capacity.

Why choose Detrusitol?

Detrusitol was shown to be tolerated well in patients and caused lower levels of side effects than its competitor oxybutynin. It can also be taken safely over a longer-term period making it a good option for anyone suffering from incontinence.

Another benefit of Detrusitol is that itis a form of an immediate-release medication meaning it gets to work fast, being absorbed into the bloodstream quickly after reaching the gut.

What is contained in Detrusitol?

The active ingredient in Detrusitol is tolterodine tartrate.

The inactive ingredients are:

  • calcium hydrogen phosphate
  • microcrystalline cellulose
  • sodium starch glycollate
  • silica colloidal anhydrous
  • magnesium stearate
  • hypromellose
  • stearic acid
  • titanium dioxide
How should I take Detrusitol?

Detrusitol should be taken twice a day in the morning and evening, and at the same time to ensure the amount of the drug remains level. Although the medication comes with a patient leaflet for further information as to how to take it, you will be advised how and when to best take the medication by your doctor and if you have any questions you can contact them, anytime, online.

The tablets should be taken with water and you can take it with or without food. In the case of a missed dose, take it as soon as you remember but do not double up on a dose if it is nearly time to take your next tablet.

How does Detrusitol work?

The active ingredient in Detrusitol is a muscle relaxant which relaxes the involuntary muscle action in the bladder wall causing incontinence.

If the muscle in the bladder wall, called a detrusor muscle, uncontrollably spasms it is known as having an overactive bladder which results in an increase in how much you need to urinate, or else causes involuntary leaking and the need to go urgently.

By blocking the receptors on the surface of the muscle cells, a chemical called acetylcholine, which stimulates the muscle and contracts the bladder causing it to empty, is prevented from working and in turn, this helps to prevent incontinence. Instead, the muscle in the bladder wall relaxes, stopping the involuntary contractions and increases the bladder’s capacity, reducing the need to urinate.

How long can I take Detrusitol for?

In studies, Detrusitol was used safely and effectively for up to 24 months in the majority of study patients. As with any longterm medication, your doctor will review your use of the treatment to ensure it is still working effectively and safely and if you have any issues then you can book an appointment online to discuss your options.

What are the side effects of Detrusitol?

Most medications can cause some form of side effect as the body adapts to it. Some patients may experience no issues at all whereas others may experience one or more side effects. It is down to each individual body and how well it tolerates the drug being introduced. In most cases, the most common side effects of Detrusitol was found to be a dry mouth, though studies showed that there was a lower occurrence with Detrusitol than other incontinence medication.

Other possible side effects include:

  • dry eyes
  • headaches
  • upset stomach
  • stomach pains
  • constipation

Side effects often occur in the first few weeks and should be mild enough not to affect your usage of the medication but if you experience any concerning issues when taking Detrusitol then contact your doctor as soon as possible to discuss alternative medications.
