The information provided in the summary table is for reference only. It is important to consult a qualified healthcare professional before starting any genital warts treatment, including Condyline.

How does Condyline work?

The active ingredient, podophyllotoxin, invades the infected cell through the nuclei, targeting its ability to multiply and thus stopping its growth.  As the cells of the wart die, healthy cells replace them and return the area to normal.

How effective is Condyline?

It is important to be aware that genital warts develop after someone has been infected with the HPV virus, which then remains in the body over the carrier’s lifetime.  As such, although the warts can be treated with medications such as Condyline, the virus itself cannot be cured, and therefore, relapses are possible, especially if a person’s immunity is weak.

In studies, the active ingredient, podophyllotoxin, was found to be safe, effective and well-tolerated amongst study members.  When applied twice a day for 3 consecutive days over 4 weeks as directed, a high level of applicants experienced positive results, with only 4 out of 21 patients experiencing a reemergence of a wart outbreak later down the line and a third having a complete removal of all warts from this one round of treatment.

What are the alternatives to Condyline?

Alternatives to the Condyline solution that are typically used to treat genital warts are Warticon cream and Aldara cream. Both of these are prescription-only topical treatments that are available at local pharmacies as well as online pharmacies. Aldara topical cream stimulates the immune system to combat the virus and aids the genital wart outbreaks to disappear gradually – the timespan usually varies around 2 to 4 months. Similarly, Warticon cream is known for containing the same ingredients as Condyline. However, Warticon is easier to apply for people with vaginas.

On the other hand, the non-medicinal alternative for the Condyline solution is to have genital warts surgically removed. Often, this is considered in cases where genital wart outbreaks occur even after all medicinal options have been used. It is vital for one to discuss this treatment option with their general practitioner to gain further information.

Why choose Condyline?

There are over 100 strains of the human papilloma virus or HPV, and as such, when looking for treatment for warts, you must be sure you are choosing a medication designed for your specific concern; for example, verrucas on the feet, lesions on the hands or genital warts.

Condyline is designed specifically for the treatment of genital warts, working to clear the infection, assist the body in fighting the abnormal cells which are creating the lesion, and in turn, help the development of normal, healthy cells in their place.

During an episode, sexual intercourse is not recommended due to the skin-to-skin nature of transmission. Since treatment with Condyline can decrease the length and severity of an outbreak, it can help a patient get back to their normal sex life in less time than when relying on the body’s immunity alone, as well as assist in the recovery of their mental state since genital wart outbreaks can severely affect some sufferers in this manner, causing anxiety and low mood.

What is contained in Condyline?

The active ingredient is 0.5% podophyllotoxin, whilst the inactive ingredients are lactic acid, sodium lactate and alcohol.  As such, be sure to let your doctor know if you are lactose intolerant.

How long can I take Condyline for?

The product is designed to be applied twice a day for 3 days and for anywhere up to 4 weeks.  After this, your doctor may recommend a new course of action, such as another topical treatment or potentially a minor procedure to remove the warts, such as freezing or excision.

If you feel the treatment is not working for you, then book a free and confidential appointment with one of Click Pharmacy’s online doctors at any time to discuss your options.

How should I take Condyline?

Be sure to read the patient leaflet before beginning any treatment and follow your doctors directions for application.

  • Wash and dry the affected area before beginning.
  • Apply the liquid to each wart, being careful not to get the solution on to surrounding healthy skin.
  • Remove any excess right away
  • Allow the medication to dry naturally
  • Do not dip into the bottle more than 50 times per application.
  • If you forget to complete your treatment, then simply apply it as soon as you remember.

Generally, Condyline is applied two times a day over 3 days, with a 12-hour window between each application. This can be done weekly for up to 4 weeks as discussed with your GP or Click Pharmacy doctor, though some people find the treatment works after one round of 6 applications. If the area heals during your treatment time, you do not need to keep applying the medication as it is not designed to go on healthy skin. Do keep in touch with your doctor during your treatment.

Side effects

Most people who suffer any side effects will find that they are minor and fade over the course of the treatment. One study found that the most common side effects are:

  • Inflammation.
  • Pain.
  • Burning sensations.
  • Itching and ‘erosions’ developing on the skin due to the wart dying off.

such side effects are often considered to be due to excessive application of the product rather than being down to the medication itself.

Risks for using Condyline

The product should not be used on healthy, wounded or open skin nor on a child under the age of 12.  If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, this product is not recommended, and you should book an appointment with your GP or a Click Pharmacy doctor to discuss your options.  If you are allergic to any of the ingredients, let your doctor know right away, and they can help you find an alternative therapy.  If you find that you begin having an allergic reaction during treatment, including swelling of the tongue, throat, eyes or face; a rash or hives or else difficulty breathing, then you must cease to use the product and get medical help right away.

Let your doctor know about any other medications you are currently taking, including complementary versions, as the active ingredients could affect one another, causing it to be less effective.

Can pregnant or breastfeeding women use Condyline Cutaneous Solution?

It is advised that pregnant or breastfeeding women do not use Condyline Cutaneous Solution. If you feel that you need to use this solution you should speak to a GP or pharmacist who may be able to advise you to use an alternative medication.
