Asthma is a respiratory disease which narrows the airways and makes breathing difficult. Inhalers can be prescribed to help ease the symptoms of asthma which include coughing, a tight chest, wheezing and short, laboured breaths.

Known as a preventer inhaler, Clenil Modulite inhalers are prescribed to anyone whose sleep is affected by breathing difficulties at least once a week and if a reliever inhaler such as Ventolin is required 2 or more times a week. Used every day, it should help to improve symptoms within a week.

How effective is Clenil?

The anti-inflammatory active ingredient in Clenil Modulate inhalers is beclometasone which is part of a family of medicines called corticosteroids which are hormones naturally produced by the adrenal glands. This medication very effectively decreases the inflammation in the lungs by stopping the allergic type response occurring in the cells of the lungs and airways. When taken correctly and as advised by your doctor, Clenil is known to be very effective at helping patients manage their asthma.

Why choose Clenil?

After using Clenil regularly and as directed your breathing should start to regulate and improve in as little 3 days. If used correctly, this longterm treatment can relieve symptoms almost entirely and even help to prevent wheezing and attacks from occurring.

Can I buy Clenil Online?

Clenil Modulite inhalers can only be bought with a prescription and you can receive this from Click Pharmacy as opposed to your GP by filling in a health questionnaire. Your answers will be assessed by our doctors and they will approve you for a prescription or advise you in finding the most appropriate alternative medication. Once you have your prescription you can purchase your medication from the online pharmacy after which it will be sent out by next day delivery.

You can also order your repeat prescription via Click Pharmacy as and when needed without redoing the questionnaire.

What is contained in Clenil?

The active ingredient in a Clenil Modulite inhaler is beclometasone dipropionate. Each puff will contain your required dosage.

The inactive ingredients are glycerol, ethanol and the CFC-free propellant norflurane

How should I take Clenil?

A Clenil Modulite inhaler will be prescribed at a certain dosage level most appropriate for your asthma and it is important you follow the doctor’s directions of how many puffs are required and when to use it. If you have any concerns about this, it is important you book a free, online appointment with our doctors at Click Pharmacy to discuss this to ensure you get the most benefit out of your medication.

  • When using your medication for the first time (or if it has not been used for 3 or more days) you can test the inhaler by releasing one puff.
  • Place the inhaler upright with your thumb on the base and the first finger on the top.
  • Breathe out as far as it feels comfortable to before placing the mouthpiece into your mouth and closing your lips around it to create a seal.
  • Begin to breathe in very slowly through your mouth and press down on the top of the inhaler and carrying on breathing in deeply.
  • Hold your breath for a few seconds and remove the inhaler from your mouth.
  • If you need to take a second puff then wait around 30 seconds and repeat.
  • When you are finished, replace the cover over the mouthpiece.

If you are taking 1000+ micrograms of Clenil or when prescribed for use by anyone under the age of 15 a device called a Volumatic spacer should be used which enables you to get more of the medication into your lungs and less in your mouth.

If you forget to take a dose, leave it and take the following puff when due. Do not take more than directed to make up for the missed one.

How does Clenil work?

Clenil Modulite inhalers are prescribed for patients whose asthma is not being well regulated and managed by a reliever inhaler alone. The dose of the active ingredient beclometasone dipropionate in every puff gets absorbed into the cells throughout the airways and down into the lungs. This stops the release of certain chemicals within these cells which cause inflammation and result in tightness of the chest, wheezing and difficulty with breathing.

As beclometasone is a slow working medication it needs to be used every day, even when you feel your breathing is steady. It will not work in the case of an asthma attack where your reliever inhaler will be required instead.

How long can I take Clenil for?

As it is used to manage asthma on a day to day basis, the Clenil Modulite inhalers can be prescribed for ongoing use. Designed to be used daily to help prevent the inflammation of the lungs and airways which results in asthma attacks, it will be prescribed with as low a dose as possible to help reduce the risk of any side effects.

You should book an appointment to review your asthma and the medication at least once a year to determine if the asthma itself is getting any worse and to ensure you are taking the correct medicine for it.

What are the side effects of Clenil?

You may notice your wheezing or shortness of breath occurring straight after using the inhaler. If this occurs, stop using it and use your reliever inhaler right away. Contact you Click Pharmacy doctor or GP as soon as possible to change your treatment.

The most common side effects of the Clenil Modulite inhaler is thrush of the mouth and throat though this is more likely to occur in those taking 400+ micrograms of beclomethasone. Rinse your mouth and clean your teeth after using the treatment to help prevent it and if thrush does occur, your GP can treat it easily.

Other possible side effects can be a hoarse voice or sore throat though using a Volumatic spacer can help this.

Rarely some people have experienced allergic reactions to this medication and this manifests in the form of a rash, hives and redness or swelling of the throat, lips and eyes. If this occurs seek medical help right away.

Other Warnings to consider

Paying close attention to your daily asthma management routine can be life saving with 3 people in the UK dying each day due to the respiratory disease. Although you may feel well, skipping your preventer inhaler can be very dangerous as the more regularly you are able to use it (as directed) the more you are able to stop attacks from occurring at all.

Do not store the medication over 30 degrees and as the canister contains pressurised liquid, keep it out of sunlight or extreme heat and frost. If it gets very cold, warm it in your hands before using it.

Before purchasing your Clenil Modulite inhaler, tell the doctor if:

  • you are allergic to any of the ingredients
  • you cannot have alcohol
  • your asthma is getting worse
  • you have or have ever been treated for TB.
