What is Anbesol Teething Gel

Anbesol teeth gel is an antiseptic and anesthetic OTC gel used to provide immediate relief from teething discomfort, tooth irritation, mouth ulcers, mild inflammation, fever blisters, and canker sores.

How effective is Anbesol teething gel?

As advised on the patient leaflet, two applications on the area affected are enough to soothe and relieve the patient instantly. After cleaning your fingertip, apply a pea-sized amount on the affected area and wait for 3 hours before you can apply the gel again. Ensure that you do not reapply the gel onto the patient more than six times in a day. An overdose could cause serious side effects such as convulsions due to too much absorption of the active ingredients into the body.

How does Anbesol teething gel work?

Each pea-sized amount of Anbesol teething gel that is applied on a little one or an adult contains the active ingredients lidocaine hydrochloride, cetylpyridinium chloride and chlorocresol.

Lidocaine hydrochloride works as anaesthesia to offer temporary relief from pain, while cetylpyridinium chloride and chlorocresol kill the bacteria and germs present. Anbesol teething gel is recommended for baby teething episodes, mouth ulcers, denture irritation, sore throats, fever blisters and canker sores.

Ensure that you or the patient does not have an underlying medical condition before administering the dose. For further details, always read the patient leaflet and label before application.

How should I take Anbesol teething gel?

Anbesol teething gel should be administered only through topical application. For adults or the elderly, apply a small amount of the pain-relieving gel onto your gums or affected area. A frequency of every three hours is advised and not more.

For children of 5 months and above, place a pea-sized amount of the gel on a clean fingertip, then apply it on the affected area. Intervals of every three hours are advised and not more than six times in a day. As too much absorption of the active ingredient, lidocaine hydrochloride, into the body can lead to fatal side effects.

In addition, medicine should not be extended past 7 days of use. Make sure always to check the label and read the patient leaflet before use.

What dose should I choose?

For adults, only use a small size of the Anbesol teething gel on the affected area. For children of 5 months and above, apply a pea size blob of the gel onto the affected areas at intervals of 3 hours. Although two applications right away can be effective. Ensure that as you apply, you do not cross the six times dose limit in a day. Also, do not continue to apply the gel if symptoms persist after 7 days in a teething episode. At this point, seek the help of a professional.

How long do I take Anbesol teething gel before I notice a difference?

Anbesol teething gel offers instant relief from pain, irritation and discomfort that is associated with a baby’s teething. Only a pea’s size amount of the gel should be applied to the area/gum affected for intervals of 3 hours. Stop application once a child’s symptoms fade. In the case that a child vomits or swallows the medicine, wait for 3 hours before reapplying the treatment again. Avoid reapplying the product immediately. To adults, 3-hour intervals are also recommended. If symptoms persist after 7 days of application, then consult a doctor or a medical professional immediately.

Side effects

Like all medication, using Anbesol Teething Gel may result in a number of different side effects. However evidence suggests that these side effects are often mild and not everyone experiences the same side effects. Common side effects include:

  • Itching around infected areas
  • Skin inflammation
  • Swelling
  • Redness

If any of these side effects worsen, you should stop using Anbesol Teething Gel immediately and seek medical advice as soon as possible.

When shouldn’t I take Anbesol teething gel?

Do not use Anbesol teething gel if you have an underlying medical condition. Talk to your doctor first for necessary medical advice on drug interaction.

As mentioned, the active ingredient lidocaine hydrochloride is an anaesthesia that is easily absorbed in the body. Therefore, do not use Anbesol teething gel if you are allergic to anaesthetics like lidocaine hydrochloride or ingredients like chlorocresol and cetylpyridinium chloride.

Anbesol teething gel is also not recommended if you are using other medications that contain lidocaine hydrochloride. Too much of this ingredient is dangerous for babies and can result in fits and death.

In case you are pregnant or are planning to have a child soon, or are breastfeeding, consult your GP or Click Pharmacy before using Anbesol teething gel.

Take into account groups of high-risk people, such as patients of epilepsy, liver disease, and people suffering from alcoholism, may need prior advice from a doctor before using this medication.

Anbesol teething gel is unsuitable for children under the age of 5 months.
