Anbesol teeth gel is an antiseptic and anesthetic OTC gel used to provide immediate relief from teething discomfort, tooth irritation, mouth ulcers, mild inflammation, fever blisters, and canker sores.
Anbesol Teething Gel is not suitable for children under the age of 5 months old. It is safe to be used by adults and elderly.
Anbesol Teething Gel is used for quick relief of pain caused by teething, usually in babies over the age of 5 months old.
You should apply a small pea sized amount around the infected areas using a clean fingertip.
The active ingredient in Anbesol Teething Gel is lidocaine.
You can apply up to 6 doses a day, at regular intervals of at least 3 hours. You should not exceed 6 doses a day.
You should stop using Anbesol teething gel once symptoms have resolved. The treatment should not be used for more than 7 consecutive days at once.
You should not combine Anbesol Teething Gel with other lidocaine containing medications as combination may cause other problems.
Anbesol Teething Gel is not recommended for use for pregnant or breastfeeding women. It is advised to speak to a GP or pharmacist who may be able to recommend an alternative product to you.
There is no evidence to suggest that using Anbesol Teething Gel affects one’s fertility in any way.
No, using Anbesol Teething Gel does not affect any type of contraception.
Yes, it is safe to drink alcohol while using Anbesol Teething Gel.
There is no evidence to suggest Anbesol Teething Gel affects one's ability to drive and operate machinery.
It is recommended to avoid having hot food and drinks while using this treatment. This is because this gel often numbs the mouth, making it easier to burn yourself.
Anbesol Teething Gel provides relief from teething pain and mouth ulcers. This is most common in babies aged over 5 months, however it can occur in adults and elderly too.
Anbesol Teething Gel is a sugar free formula which includes two antiseptics. These antiseptics help prevent against chances of any further infection.
As advised on the patient leaflet, two applications on the area affected are enough to soothe and relieve the patient instantly. After cleaning your fingertip, apply a pea-sized amount on the affected area and wait for 3 hours before you can apply the gel again. Ensure that you do not reapply the gel onto the patient more than six times in a day. An overdose could cause serious side effects such as convulsions due to too much absorption of the active ingredients into the body.
Anbesol teething gel is recommended for children with five months of age and over.
Each unit of Anbesol teething gel weighs 10g.
For adults only use a small size of the Anbesol teething gel on the affected area. For children of 5 months and above, apply a pea size blob of the gel onto the affected areas at intervals of 3 hours. Although two applications right away can be effective. Ensure that as you apply, you do not cross the six times dose limit in a day. Also, do not continue to apply the gel if symptoms persist after 7 days in a teething episode. At this point, seek the help of a professional.
Anbesol teething gel should be administered only through topical application. For adults or the elderly, apply a small amount of the pain-relieving gel onto your gums or affected area. A frequency of every three hours is advised and not more.
For children of 5 months and above place a pea-sized amount of the gel on a clean fingertip, then apply it on the affected area. Intervals of every three hours are advised and not more than six times in a day. As too much absorption of the active ingredient, lidocaine hydrochloride, into the body, can lead to fatal side effects.
In addition, medicine should not be extended past 7 days of use. Make sure always to check the label and read the patient leaflet before use.
Each pea-sized amount of Anbesol teething gel that is applied on a little one or an adult contains the active ingredients lidocaine hydrochloride, cetylpyridinium chloride and chlorocresol.
Lidocaine hydrochloride works as anaesthesia to offer temporary relief from pain while cetylpyridinium chloride and chlorocresol kill the bacteria and germs present. Anbesol teething gel is recommended for baby teething episodes, mouth ulcers, denture irritation, sore throats, fever blisters and canker sores.
Ensure that you or the patient does not have an underlying medical condition before administering the dose. For further details, always read the patient leaflet and label before application.
Anbesol teething gel offers instant relief from pain, irritation and discomfort that is associated with a baby’s teething. Only a pea’s size amount of the gel should be applied to the area/gum affected for intervals of 3 hours. Stop application once a child’s symptoms fade. In the case that a child vomits or swallows the medicine, wait for 3 hours before reapplying the treatment again. Avoid reapplying the product immediately. To adults 3-hour intervals are also recommended. If symptoms persist after 7 days of application, then consult a doctor or a medical professional immediately.
Even though Anbesol teething gel contains alcohol, it does not affect your ability to drive. Nonetheless, medical assistance should be sought before administering the gel to people suffering from alcoholism. Like any other medicine, users of Anbesol teething gel may or may not experience side effects such as dermatitis, mouth irritation, itching, rash, hives and redness of the skin. In case you experience any side effect, report it to your doctor for further assistance and advice.
Do not use Anbesol teething gel if you have an underlying medical condition. Talk to your doctor first for necessary medical advice on drug interaction.
As mentioned, the active ingredient lidocaine hydrochloride is an anaesthesia that is easily absorbed in the body. Therefore, do not use Anbesol teething gel if you are allergic to anaesthetics like lidocaine hydrochloride or ingredients like chlorocresol and cetylpyridinium chloride.
Anbesol teething gel is also not recommended if you are using other medications that contain lidocaine hydrochloride. Too much of this ingredient is dangerous for babies and can result in fits and death.
In case you are pregnant or are planning to have a child soon, or are breastfeeding, consult your GP or Click Pharmacy before using Anbesol teething gel.
Take into account groups of high risk people such as patients of epilepsy, liver disease and people suffering from alcoholism may need prior advice from a doctor before using this medication.
Anbesol teething gel is unsuitable for children under the age of 5 months.
All of these oral medications are benzocaine products, and they work as local anaesthesias, mainly to provide relief against dental discomfort and pain from teething. Nonetheless, they differ in form. While Anbesol is a gel, Orajel is a liquid and hurricane is a spray.
The FDA advises that the use of all Benzocaine products under different brand names should be monitored. In rare cases, one should check for signs of methemoglobinemia, another name for when the patient becomes pale, runs short of breath, feels fatigues or experiences confusion and lightheadedness. Such symptoms are expected to appear within minutes or hours of use, and in case, you notice them seek medical attention immediately.
Like all medication, using Anbesol Teething Gel may result in a number of different side effects. However evidence suggests that these side effects are often mild and not everyone experiences the same side effects. Common side effects include:
If any of these side effects worsen, you should stop using Anbesol Teething Gel immediately and seek medical advice as soon as possible.
Always read the patient information leaflet before starting your treatment. The patient information can be found here.
